Marvel released the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy trailer on Tuesday afternoon. As usual, the comic book community took to the internet in the hopes of squeezing every possible detail out of each frame. With the grand variety of comic book films on popularized characters in the mainstream, like The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Man of Steel. Guardians of the Galaxy is still a broad unknown that leaves a very open set of questions, all the while teasing the curiosity of fans all over the world.
With the massive cast taking shape in this teaser, it’s obvious the main character and protagonist is Peter J. Quill, self-proclaimed as Star-Lord, as stated by Rhomann Dey (John C. Reilly) in the trailer “…Himself mostly” when asked the question “Who calls him that?” One by one the main characters are introduced in the trailer to help the audience begin identifying this rag-tag band of misfits and outlaws; who happen to call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy. Fans of the rebooted 1969 comic book series will be happy to see glimpses of many of the film’s characters; like Nebula, Ronan the Accuser, The Collector, and Korath the Pursuer played by Karen Gillan, Lee Pace, Benicio Del Toro, and Djimon Hounsou respectively.
For those that are outside of the general comic book world, watching this trailer is nothing more than a parade of strange and wondrous alien sights, a film likely to be perfectly comfortable in a purely science fiction category. However, Marvel’s release of this highly anticipated trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, will no doubt have savvy fans trying to derive as much possible material, story, and character pictures as is possible.
There are small Easter eggs in Marvel’s trailer that have been pointed out by a variety of fans throughout the internet. Among these mentions are the charges against Star-Lord indicating his “Illegal Manipulation of a Gramosian Duchess…” which can be seen in the holographic image as he appears to be giving his captors the ‘finger’ and to the slight image of Ronan’s sledge-hammer-like weapon in a scene where he appears to be choking (and lifting) Drax the Destroyer, played by Dave Bautista. Many of these scenes are briskly momentary, and only allow the audience to glean a sliver of what the film is going to provide. It would seem that these slivers of information are enough to set the fan community ablaze.
Other references that Marvel displays in this trailer, are the varied story and thematic uses of past film’s styles. Among the many commentaries throughout the internet, the comparison of the opening scene likened to the opening from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark heavily dominate online conversation. The title theme and various uses of classic rock have also been compared to be in the same vein as Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy.
With the many comic book films releasing this year, it would seem that Marvel’s highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy is at the top of the list, right along with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film is set to release later this year, Aug. 1. Haven’t seen the trailer yet? Check it out below.
