Another celebrity marriage has come to an end with Robin Thicke and Paula Patton deciding to split. The pair were married for nine years and together for 22 years, but decided mutually that it was time to bring things to an end.
However, despite the pair declaring that the decision was mutual, many fans took to Twitter to blame the singer. Thicke’s recent video for Blurred Lines has a number of women in minimal clothing. Patton did laugh off the video, but fans believe that that has something to do with the couple calling it quits. The VMA performance, involving a scantily clad Miley Cyrus twerking against him, was also used as ammo by the fans.
One user by the username Sierra_oxo believes that the VMA performance shows that the singer was never faithful in his relationship. However, many stars have performed risqué scenes on TV, movies and the stage but have managed a happy marriage. Most partners accept that it is part of the job. It seems that it is just a number of people looking to place the blame on someone, and Thicke seems to be the obvious option.
It will be difficult for the pair. They have been together for a total of 22 years, including the nine year marriage. Hollywood Life reports that they’ve been together since the singer was 16-years-old, so it will be a sudden change for both even if it has been mutual. They also have a son together, Julian Fuego, but it is likely that joint custody will be opted for since the split for Thicke and Patton has been mutual.
It has seemed that a divorce has been on the cards for a while. As well as the music video and the stage performance with Cyrus, the Blurred Lines singer was photographed groping a woman’s bottom and close to kissing another woman. It could have been these photographs that made it clear for Patton that the relationship was no longer going to work and it was time to let her childhood sweetheart go. Yet, in January, they were spotted at the Grammy Awards together as if there were no troubles between them.
Thicke has made it clear that he still loves his soon-to-be ex-wife. They are best friends, but it is best for the two of them and their son if they go their separate ways in their love lives. At least Patton won’t have to worry about what her husband is up to when he’s away. The 36-year-old singer did admit that his marriage to 38-year-old Patton was one of the most “functional dysfunctional” in the whole of Hollywood, and also the “greatest love of the century.”
There has been no confirmation for the reasons for the breakup, or how long it has been on the cards. The statement of the separation was made yesterday, but it is clear that the couple has talked it through to get to this point. While Thicke and Patton will split, they will remain best friends and that is likely to make it easier for their three-year-old son.
