Robin Thicke, Paula Patton Separate

The Blurred Lines are no more in Robin Thicke’s marriage – he and Paula Patton, his wife of eight years, have separated.  Thicke and Patton have a young son, Julian Fuego, and were onetime teenage sweethearts, having met when Patton was just 14.  The couple’s marriage had been on the brink for some time, according to US Magazine.

In addition to being known for the hottest song of the summer, Thicke is also the son of Growing Pains‘ alumnus Alan Thicke and singer Gloria Loring.  Rumors have been rife about the couple’s impending demise for months, largely due to photos surfacing that put Robin Thicke in an unflattering light.  Whether it was a shot, caught in a well-placed mirror, of Thicke’s hand on the behind of a female fan or the infamous twerking incident during his Blurred Lines performance during the 2013 Video Music Awards, Thicke has managed to keep his name in the press during several of the hottest events of the year.

For her part, Patton is also known for her roles in Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Hitch, among others.  She’s made almost a meteoric rise into some of Hollywood’s hottest films, including 21 Guns with Denzel Washington.  She’s also a model and was only 14 when she met the then 12-year-old Thicke, who was just making his first forays into songwriting.  It was as a songwriter that Thicke first became known, penning hits for the likes of Christina Aguilera and Marc Anthony.  The two had a brief relationship as teens and married in 2005.  Son Julian was born in 2010.

Thicke said his marriage was the most “functional dysfunctional marriage” in Hollywood after the VMAs, and Patton herself said she could not understand why there had been such an outcry about his performance with Miley Cyrus.  She pointed out the two had practiced the routine for three days prior to the awards ceremony and said that Cyrus was only dancing the same way many others did at that time.

Even though Paula Patton and Robin Thicke have chosen to separate, the pair say they are “best friends” and love each other a great deal.  This may seem a fairly stock sort of response when relationships end in Hollywood, but according to both Patton and Thicke, the two have seen each other through some bumpy times and could be counted on to have each other’s backs.

The pair have, however, weathered their share of scandals.  Rumors of Thicke cheating on his spouse surfaced at the end of August 2013, but the pair defended their relationship.  Thicke scoffed at the suggestion that he and Patton needed to spice things up in their relationship; he told the reporter that perhaps they needed to “take a few spices off the shelf” instead.

The duo have had one of the longer-lived marriages in Hollywood, and while that may be no mean feat, it seems that things were not destined to work out for Robin Thicke and Paula Patton.  The Blurred Lines between the two are no more, and the two will be working on co-parenting their young son while they learn to live separate lives.
