Juan Martin Del Potro has defeated Gael Monfils in this year’s Rotterdam ATP 500 event, and thus the big Argentine will continue on in his tournament bid. Monfils is coming off of red-hot performances throughout the beginning of the season, and just recently defeated fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet. With the win over Gasque, Monfils brought a new ranking, focus, and intensity into the first round match in Rotterdam.
Del Potro however, looked ready for the challenge as he was back to hitting his bruising groundstrokes with scary consistency. The Argentine looked to have the first set done and dusted with a 5-4 40-0 lead and three set points. Monfils however managed to stage a bit of a comeback and the two headed into a first set tie-breaker. The tie-breaker was neck and neck, locked up at 6-6 when Monfils took a chance and missed a forehand down the line. Del Potro took advantage and banked the set that he nearly squandered.
As two progressed through the second set, Del Potro, although he is reportedly still nursing a tender left wrist, looked to be devastatingly strong from the baseline. Monfils however, one of the quickest men in the top 25, showed off his speed running down many would-be winners hit by the tall Argentinian bruiser. In the end, Juan Martin Del Potro looked too be a bit to strong for Monfils as he blasted his way to a 7-6, 6-3 victory to move into the second round of Rotterdam.
