Academy Award Fashion Review: Pancake Boob and Peplum

The 86th annual Academy Awards were held in Los Angeles last evening and it was a veritable fashion feast with everything from peplum to pancake boob on the menu.  From Oscar darling Lupita Nyong’o’s ice blue Prada gown to fellow winner Jared Leto’s chic St. Laurent white tuxedo jacket, the stars did not disappoint.

The dresses were all very classic and in sharp, vibrant tones.  Basic black was passed over in favor of dark navy in both gowns and tuxedos.  Jewelry seemed understated and tasteful.  Gone are the days where celebrities are practically begging for attention by wearing the most outrageous design they can come up with.  Has Hollywood collectively grown up?  Here is the 2014 Academy Award fashion review, the best of the best.

Academy Award Fashion Review: Pancake Boob and PeplumLupita Nyong’o – This Kenyan newcomer owned awards season.  In the days leading up to the Oscars everyone was all a buzz wondering what she would be wearing for what was sure to be her big night.  Nyong’o did not disappoint, showing up on the red carpet in a plunging pale blue Prada ball gown that was custom-made for her petite frame.  She also gave us the first glimpse of the popular “pancake boob.”  Described as breasts that are not so much large as they are far apart, pancake boob had its rightful place on this year’s red carpet.  Nyong’o pulled off the look effortlessly and was rewarded with her very first Oscar for her role in  12 Years a Slave.

Jennifer Lawrence – No stranger to the red carpet, Lawrence has made very few fashion missteps over the years. Academy Award Fashion Review: Pancake Boob and Peplum She chose a beautiful fire red Dior gown that featured the second fashion trend of the evening, a peplum waist.  Lawrence completed the look with a 2 million dollar, 100 carat Neil Lane necklace that she wore down her back, just as she did last year when she brought home her first Academy Award for Best Actress.  Lawrence didn’t bring home another golden statue this year but her effortless glamour was still a winner.

Academy Award Fashion Review: Pancake Boob and PeplumCate Blanchette – Another fashion heavy hitter, Blanchette favors simple dresses in muted hues.  Her stunning embroidered Armani Prive gown had a nude base and featured gold sequins and many crystals that closely resembled flower petals.  A stunning look for the latest Best Actress winner for her role in Blue Jasmine.

Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey – The Academy Awards best-dressed lists are usually dominated Academy Award Fashion Review: Pancake Boob and Peplumby the women, but these two co-stars proved to everyone that the men show up with just as much game as the ladies.   Leto chose a white tuxedo jacket by St. Laurent and paired it with a crimson bow tie and slim fitting black trousers.  McConaughey, on the other hand, kept the look more classic with his white Dolce & Gabanna jacket and black tie.  The best dressed men of the evening not only won for their respective roles in The Dallas Buyers Club, but they gave two of the most touching and heartfelt speeches of the evening.  Well done, boys.

Academy Award Fashion Review: Pancake Boob and PeplumAmy Adams – Sweet Amy Adams.  The perennial bridesmaid of the Oscars.  Adams always shows up a winner on the red carpet and last evening was no different.  Embracing two of the evening’s trends, dark navy and peplum, Adams wore her Gucci gown with her gorgeous red head held high.  The girl is a winner, even if she doesn’t come home with a gold statuette.

The 86th annual Academy Awards gave us plenty of beautiful fashion as well as some interesting new trends.  As for the 2014 awards season, it’s a wrap.
