The 86th edition of the Academy Awards has just ended, but some still reminisce about its forgotten twin, the AVN Awards, dubbed “adult Oscars,” which took place in Las Vegas on January 18. The 31st edition of the show represents the adult industry’s biggest night and just like the Oscars, it comes with a red carpet and star-studded ceremony. AVN celebrates distinguished achievements in “the business of pleasure” and offers awards in categories like Best Actor, Best Actress and other trophies for domain-related sections.
About 100 awards are offered during the adult Oscars, the Academy Awards’ forgotten twin, given AVN’s nickname and the event has been broadcasted on Showtime Networks for six years. The AVN Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas is viewed by millions and attended by hundreds of stars from the adult culture and the show includes performances by Grammy-nominated Flo Rida, Smash Mouth and Baby Bash. This year, the adult Oscars took place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and comedian Rebekah Kochan and adult stars, Chanel Preston and Samantha Saint hosted the event.
“It’s the most put-together award show,” Preston said.
The host stated that AVN Awards is also the biggest event of its kind and comes immediately after Adult Entertainment Expo, a show that is usually packed with fans. Preston added that the adult Oscars also represent the most glamorous show in the “business of pleasure,” where all attendants are dressed up and aim at being the epitome of elegance. The Academy Awards’ forgotten twin, when taking into consideration the nickname AVN Awards received is no different from the original Oscars in terms of beauty and fashion, and even some categories like Best Actor and Best Actress.
Adult entertainment star, Jayden Lee told Las Vegas Sun that the adult Oscars walk hand in hand with a busy schedule. She stated that her day began with media interviews, autograph signing and fan rendezvous and ended with the red carpet and event, but she also admitted that she did not expect the day to be so crowded.
31 Years of AVN Awards
AVN Awards, dubbed “adult Oscars” is the forgotten twin of the Academy Awards, taking into consideration its nickname, but although the Dolby Theatre is replaced by Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, the event promises to honor talent and give credit “to the hardworking people who create the mystique and fantasy of erotic entertainment.”
AVN Awards first saw the daylight in 1984 and offered the public elaborate locations like Caesar’s Palace in 1998, where 2,500 people participated. However, the largest red carpet event in the adult Oscars’ history took place in 2010 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, where mainstream celebrities representing over 25 nations transformed the AVN Awards into a night to remember. Although “the business of pleasure” does not receive the same coverage as the Academy Awards, the event aims at resembling the Oscars.
Adult Oscars represent the Academy Awards’ forgotten twin in terms of importance but, although the AVN Awards take place earlier and receive less public attention, the show has been refined over the years and flatters the Oscars by following in its footsteps in terms of format and elegance.
