Forty-two illegal African migrants drowned today after their boat was overturned, making the hopeful trip to freedom a fatal one. Many Africans have braved dangerous trips out of their countries, particularly Ethiopians and Somalis. Unfortunately for many, including the 42 who died today, the road to freedom is paved with adversity. In 2012 as many as 84,000 fled poverty and headed into Yemen. Todays journey ended poorly for 42 of those struggling for a better life, but at least 30 people who ventured out today were saved and taken to a refugee camp in Mayfaa, thanks to Yemeni naval patrol. There is hope for Africans to get out of poverty, but it comes at a price.
