The Oscars will be on Sunday, but what the world really wants to know is who won the Golden Razzie Awards held in Los Angeles on Saturday night? The Razzies are given to the best-worst movies, directors, screenplays, actors and actresses of Hollywood, and the 34th Annual Razzie Awards definitely had a lot of dreck to choose from this past year.
One of the big winners, if you can call her that, was Kim Kardashian, who was awarded the Worst Supporting Actress Razzie for her dubious contributions to the Tyler Perry movie Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.
One of the worst movies of 2013 was Movie 43. It garnered a Golden Raspberry Award for both Worst Director and Worst Screenplay, and one for the Worst Picture. The Worst Director Razzie was equally shared by the 16 directors the movie had.
The big-budget science fiction box office flop directed by M. Night Shyamalan, After Earth, also was “honored” by having the acting father-and-son duo, Will and Jaden Smith, winning Razzie Awards for Worst Actor and Worst Supporting Actor. They also took home the Razzie for Worst Screen Combo.
In After Earth, Will and Jaden Smith played two people stranded on a hostile and deserted future version of Earth. Online voters were responsible for their earning the Golden Razzie for Worst Screen Duo.
Picking up the Worst Actress Razzie was Tyler Perry as Madea in A Madea Christmas, while the Razzie for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel went to The Lone Ranger.
Most actors and actresses have accepted their Razzie Awards with humor and grace, as they are a form of honor, albeit one for bad acting.
Movie 43 was an ensemble comedy. It featured many big names, like Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Kristen Bell, Gerard Butler, emma Watson and Kate Winslet, but probably most people who saw it would have to agree that it was a truly terrible motion picture. The actors were in a series of obscene and crazy sketches. It is already being called one of the worst flicks of all time.
Kim Kardashian’s Razzie was her first ever, and The Lone Ranger just earned one Razzie for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel.
Adam Sandler has been a big Razzie winner in past years, having won two for both Worst Actor and Worst Actress for his dual acting job in Jack & Jill. However, last Saturday, he didn’t win even one Razzie, though the movie he was in, Grown Ups 2, had been nominated in the most categories of any movie — eight.
The Golden Raspberry Awards on Saturday evening were held in Los Angeles mere blocks away from the location of Sunday night’s Academy Awards, which will be held at the Dolby Theater. The Academy Awards may get more attention than the Golden Raspberries or Razzies, but the Razzie Awards are a fun way to celebrate the worst that Hollywood has put out during the past year.
