Arkansas Abortion Ban Struck Down by Federal Judge

arkansas abortionA federal court judge has struck down the attempt by Arkansas legislation to ban abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Arkansas legislature overrode the veto from Gov. Mike Beebe to pass the law in March 2013, which would ban abortion care beginning after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The ACLU of Arkansas challenged the law along with the Center for Reproductive Rights.

According to the U.S. District Judge the ban went against U.S. Supreme Court decisions which previously stipulated the ability of a fetus to survive outside the mother’s womb should be the determining factor in instances of abortion. Susan Webber Wright, the judge responsible for stopping the enforcement of the law last year, made her final decision Friday.
