Arsenal FC Hold off Tottenham 1-0

The rest of the top four of the English Premier League got a big break on Saturday as Chelsea lost 1-0 to Aston Villa. One of the teams this helped tremendously is Arsenal as they held off Tottenham 1-0 today to stay in third place in the league. After a disappointing exit from the Champions League in midweek this was a very good way to bounce back for the Gunners.

Arsenal and Tottenham matches are always a hotly contested affair and today’s match was no different. Arsenal went ahead in just the second minute on the foot of Tomas Rosicky and never looked back. The man in form for the Gunners Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain created the chance with some great work in the midfield and Rosicky finished the chance with an absolutely superb strike. Tottenham took control in the second half but were not able to find a way through the stubborn Arsenal defense. Rosicky was only in the starting eleven because of the midweek injury to playmaker Mesut Ozil, and Arsenal will be glad he did make the start as he fires them to victory.

All three teams who are below Chelsea in the English Premier League table, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, capitalized on Chelsea’s loss and won their matches to draw closer on points. Yesterday Manchester City beat Hull 2-0 with only 10 men to stay in fourth, however they have three games in hand and if they can win all three they will go atop the table. Perhaps the most impressive of the three victories was Liverpool’s 3-0 trouncing of Manchester United in Manchester on the back of two Steven Gerrard free kicks. Now Chelsea will be looking over their shoulders as their cushion at the top is dwindling, they will get multiple chances to try to add to their table lead as they still have Arsenal and Liverpool on their schedule.

Arsenal and Chelsea will face off in the EPL next weekend and the Gunners will be looking for nothing short of victory as they travel to Stamford Bridge. Manager Arsene Wegner has not fared well over the recent past against Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and if Wegner wants to win Arsenal’s first EPL title since 2003 he will have to change that this weekend. Arsenal will have the advantage of rest as Chelsea have to play their second leg match of the Champions League last 16 against Galatasaray in midweek. The previous match between the two rivals in December ended in a 0-0 draw so the match this weekend will decide the season series between the two and go a long way to deciding the title winners.

Today Arsenal got a much-needed victory as they held off rival Tottenham to win 1-0. The Gunners still have a lot of work to do if they want to win the English Premier League and a big part of that will be getting a result against Chelsea in their matchup next week. They were able to take advantage of Chelsea’s loss this weekend and will be hoping they are the team that inflicts the loss upon Chelsea next weekend.
