Back pain or back ache is seen as one of the most common health problems, which almost everyone– eight out of ten people–at some level experiences during their lifetime. This may affect people of any age, though it is significantly more found among adults aged between 35 and 55 years. Sharp back ache comes on suddenly, and lasts for several days to some weeks. But what are the symptoms and causes of this?
Back ache varies from one person to the next. The pain may have a slow onset or come on suddenly. The pain may be broken or constant. Most of the time, back ache goes away in a few weeks’ time. However, especially low back pain can make many everyday actions difficult to do. Back ache is termed chronic if it stays longer than 3 months.
Even though back ache tends to be painful and uncomfortable, it’s not typically serious. Specialists state that back ache is connected with the way human bones, ligaments and muscles in backs work together.
Who may get back pain?
Anybody may get back pain any time, but certain factors that swell the risk are:
• Getting old. The older one gets the chance is more to develop back pain. One might first get back pain between 30 and 40 years old.
• Lack of physical fitness. Back ache is normal in individuals who are unfit.
• Being overweight. Extra weight may stress the back and cause pain.
• Heredity. Some causes of back ache, for example ankylosing spondylitis, a kind of arthritis that distresses the spine, can have a genetic component.
• Job. If one has to lift, pull or push, while twisting the spine, the person might have back ache. If one does not sit up straight and does desk job all day long and, the person can have back ache too.
• Smoking. The body might be unable to have adequate nutrients to the disks in the back if smoked. Smoker’s cough can cause back pain as well. Smokers take more time to heal, so back ache might stay longer.
What causes back pain?
There are many symptoms and causes of back pain. Back ache may be acute or stabbing. It can be dull or achy. Examples are:
• Disk breakdown
• Muscle spasms
• Ruptured disks
• Strained ligaments
• Lifting something improperly and that is very heavy
• The effect of an awkward and abrupt movement
Some other causes of back pain include daily activities, such as:
• Awkward bending
• Pushing and pulling something
• Lifting and carrying something
• Long time standing
• Long time bending down
• Coughing and sneezing
• Muscle tension
• Long time sitting in a hunched position
• Driving longer periods without a pause
Injuries from fractures, accidents, sprains and falls may lead to back pain. Back pain can also come with some diseases and conditions, structural problems. Further probable reasons of back ache are tumors or stress, infections, sleep disorders and bad mattress.
Most back pain goes away on its own, though it may take a while. Taking pain relievers and resting can help. However, staying in bed for more than 1 or 2 days can make it worse. If the back pain is severe or doesn’t improve after three days, or is associated with fever, chills, or unexpected weight loss, the person should call the doctor. Also medical attention should be sought if back pain is developed following an injury.
There is still remedy for back pain symptoms and causes. Back pain treatment depends on what kind of pain one has. The treatment can include cold or hot packs, medicines, exercise, injections, complementary and substitute treatments, and sometimes surgery.
