Captain America: The Winter Soldier is due to arrive in theaters April 4, and a four-minute clip from the movie has been released featuring none other than UFC star, and former welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre. St Pierre plays Batroc the Leaper, one of a group of villains Cap and crew are set to take on.
The plot of the new film finds Cap taking on baddies that are instantly recognizable to Marvel fans, including Batroc, Crossbones, and the titular foe, The Winter Soldier, played by Sebastian Stan who is reprising his role as Bucky Barnes, former super-sidekick turned nemesis. The more subtle antagonist though is a modern age that is defined by its moral ambiguity.
The story features topics that are pulled from the headlines, such as debates over privacy and civil liberties. Cap has now acclimated himself to the present day after being frozen in ice for decades and is ready to take on threats foreign and domestic, as he tangles with corrupt forces within S.H.I.E.L.D. who are trying to redefine America.
He isn’t going it alone though. Joining Georges St Pierre as a new star to the Captain America franchise is Anthony Mackie, who plays the winged-hero known as The Falcon. Scarlett Johansson returns, donning skin-tight leather as Black Widow, as does Sam Jackson, who is back playing avenger assembler, Nick Fury. Robert Redford is also in the film, bringing a true Hollywood heavyweight to the screen alongside the former UFC welterweight champ.
Georges St Pierre, who successfully defended the UFC welterweight championship 12 consecutive times before just recently vacating the title, surely welcomes this break from the fight world to appear in this Summer blockbuster. St Pierre’s last fight was a controversial decision win against heavy-hitting wrestler, Johny Hendricks, but afterwards the champ delivered a jarring post-fight interview where he seemed mentally exhausted and confused about his future in MMA. Now free from the weight of being champion for the first time in nearly seven years, St Pierre has a chance to shine in a major theatrical movie and the part couldn’t be more perfect.
St Pierre plays Batroc the Leaper, a mercenary and a master of the French form of kick boxing known as savate. While St. Pierre is primarily recognized for his abilities as a wrestler inside the Octagon, his resume as a striker is not to be overlooked. The 32-year-old, who hails from Montreal, is a French-Canadian hero, who has been compared to Jean-Claude Van Damme in both speech and appearance. Whether or not Batroc has the skills or luck to survive to a third Cap movie is not yet known.
This latest installment is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who Marvel so far has been very pleased with. It has already been rumored the the brother duo will be returning to helm Captain America 3 due to a very successful production and positive initial test screenings. That sequel is scheduled to release in 2017, but for now, check out this clip from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to get the first glimpse at Georges St Pierre as Batroc the Leaper.
