In keeping with the theme of a post apocalyptic world, the first teaser of the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes aired during the season finale of The Walking Dead and it shows an Ape army ready to ride into battle. Timing for the teaser clip shown on AMC during the Dead season four finale could not have been better for maximum coverage.
Actor Andy Serkis obviously got out his motion capture suit again to portray Caesar the leader of the apes who have revolted to take over a world run by humans. In the first film, a virus sweeps through the population that starts its spread via an airliner pilot who helps spread the infection throughout the world.
Caesar joins his ape army and leaves, after saying goodbye to his “owner” James Franco. Serkis, who is better known for his motion capture performances than his “real” ones has proven to be the best in the business. The 49 year-old actor has performed sans capture quite a lot lately and did so most brilliantly in his portrayal of punk rock legend Ian Dury in the 2010 film about his life Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.
However, it is his performance capture roles, aka motion capture, that have gained the star the most recognition. Despite getting a bit “long in the tooth” to go through all the contortions needed to portray creatures like Caesar and the Gollum in the Lord of the Rings verses, he continues to give award winning performances which thrill audiences and bring to life these wondrous creations.
The tiny glimpse of British actor Andy Serkis as Caesar in the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes teaser trailer, with its army of apes, during the finale show of The Walking Dead looks to be the usual top level of the actor’s ability to make these computer generated characters come to life.
Granted, the clip is only 43 seconds long, but it has enough action packed into this small glimpse of the upcoming sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes to cause fans to salivate helplessly in anticipation. There are very few reboots of original “classics” as effective as this one. The first film, which does, admittedly, contain an awful lot of “of the’s” in its title was still a worthy remake or re-imaging of a much loved film.
Serkis in the guise of Caesar looks pretty impressive in the seconds long teaser trailer, with war paint on his face and looking very grim, yet determined. It will be interesting to see just how the filmmakers follow up with Caesar’s story and whether or not the film will mention the absence of James Franco’s character. The film does have the impressive fellow British actor Gary Oldman in the cast list so at least two characters in the film should be interesting.
The teaser clip of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and its ape army does look very promising and fans are excited to see the first glimpse of the sequel to the first remake. The film title does still suffer from an overabundance of “of the’s” but this 43 second long tantalizing glimpse looks brilliant despite this grammatical annoyance. See the trailer below.
