Digital fabrication is considered a new technique that is has been used a lot lately. It is becoming so important in the design and architectural world today, and people are seeing more and more projects being used. It is connecting the gap between design and architecture with the design disciplines.
Several projects have been crossing the boundaries of the traditional design that people know, and started to explore the relationship between the human body and a 3D artifact. A new context for practicing design nowadays has been created by benefiting from the development of digital technology, especially the technology of computer graphics and imaging. Due to all of that new technology that is been established, the original craftsman is now considered to be as “old-fashioned”, and the trend of intangible design is becoming a reality.
Many fashion designers as well as interior designers started using the digital fabrication technique in order to design and produce new items. One of the best known projects in the fashion design world is Project DNA, by Ms. Catherine Wales. In her project, Ms. Wales attempts to investigate how the use of digital context will help in producing a new way of designs. She believes that the new designs will emerge a new interdisciplinary field in the borderlands between science, humanities and art. This will be established with the help of its own extended meaning and applications.
One of the well-designed items in Project DNA is a corset with perforations across the bodice. Those perforations or small holes are meant to hold the elements in order to resemble the scaffolding, which connect to sphere-shaped joints that can be added to other pieces. The DNA project easily enhanced the design process by first scanning the body of a human figure, in order to import the data and the measurements into a 3D modeling software. After the use of a 3D modeling software, the computer models were then sent to a special printers knows as “SLS 3D printers”.
This new developed technology is also known as rapid prototyping. It works by using a specific kind of a software to help in dividing these computer designs into triangular surfaces or sides. This allows a 3D printer to read the designs and then easily deposit few successive layers of material to sheet form. Later on, the layers join together automatically in order to create the final design, corresponding to the initial and detailed computer model.
Those kinds of projects have several advantages that create a great potential of the final process. Some of these advantages can be creating a digital avatar of the prospective wearer by the use of a specific 3D scanner. This kind of a technique helped in having each piece to be separately custom designed and built specifically for the shape of the specific body. Due to that new digital technology, all the designs, as they are constructed in new models, entered a new era.
Another advantage of digital fabrication technique is that it welcomes three different fields at once. It combines a new cross-pollinates high fashion, the use of new technology and science in order to re-evaluate the conventional methods of dress construction. It is known to be a great factor that pushes the boundaries of digital fabrication within the luxury market.
