Fred Phelps Sr., the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, a controversial organization known for its anti-gay stance and picketing funerals, is dead at age 84, two of his children have said.
According to Phelps’s son, Timothy Phelps, his father died before midnight on Wednesday. The church founder was excommunicated from the church in August of 2013. The WBC was infamous throughout the United States for controversial acts such as picketing funerals, holding protests at mosques, and praising controversial events such as 9/11 as God’s way of punishing people for allowing homosexuality and abortion.
No one from the Westboro Baptist Church, which is based in Topeka, KS, has yet made a public comment on Phelps’s passing.
