Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn, aka “Hodor,” has come out as gay in an interview chat earlier this week on a fan site dedicated to the popular series. Nairn says that he has never specifically hid his sexual orientation and that he has recently been looking for a public forum in which to express his alignment with the gay community. He says that when people speak about the LGBT community, they are speaking about him.
Nairn says he has even tried to lead interview questions into the arena of his sexual orientation, but it’s never worked out, until now. The fan site for Game of Thrones, Winter is Coming, had asked him specifically about the fact that a significant section of his fan base of made up of gay “bears.” Bears are defined in the LGBT community as being men of size who enjoy other men who are also large and who are also generally hairy. This is perceived as being very masculine and thus appealing to men who enjoy that particular look.
When asked about his feelings about being followed by many “bears,” as well as other members of the gay community, he said, “I think it’s really lovely. There’s not a day that I don’t get a few messages, but 99% or more are super sweet and nothing smutty at all! Again, it’s a privilege, and I really mean that.”
His admission has caused a lot of positive fan reaction, with many people posting notes of congratulations on social media. Some notes on his Facebook page were full of supportive sentiment. “you are amazing and I am very happy for you coming out hugs and kisses from rainbowmum” said one commenter. Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn, aka Hodor, coming out as gay may also serve as inspiration to other celebrities who are still in the closet.
With regard to his fellow castmates, Nairn says his sexual orientation has never been an issue at all. The kids on the set, he says, are not tuned into the old ways of thinking and have no time for antiquated mindsets. Thus, they think of his being gay as a non-issue.
Nairn says that being gay is a very “small part” of he who is as a person overall, and that he has been open about it with everyone around him. While he has never hidden his sexuality, the Game of Thrones star says being acknowledged as being gay is important, and although it’s of no concern to anyone in his life, he says, “nonetheless, in this day and age, it’s important to stand up and be counted. I have and always will stand my ground.”
Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn aka Hodor has come out as gay in a new interview posted on the fan website Winter Is Coming. While of course his many fans are excited for him and wish him congratulations, they seem generally more concerned with the upcoming plot twists in the show and the fact that it was recently revealed that the executive producers know how the show will end. Best of luck to Nairn as he continues to find success on the popular series.
