How I Met Your Mother is in the midst of its final season, and as such, the cast and crew of the hit television show have been making their rounds to various talk shows. The series finale is on Monday, and everyone wants to discuss the possible endings to the nine-year television series. The finale has been shot and the various actors that played the lovable characters on the show have all started finding work elsewhere, but on a recent appearance on Inside the Actors Studio, the How I Met Your Mother cast showed that even when put on the spot, they can perform with the best of them.
An audience member mentions that Les Miserables is making a return to Broadway and asks, in honor of that, if Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Segel would perform a scene from the musical. After a not-so-reluctant back and forth about who would play who, Harris belts out the first line of “Confrontation” and begins what has to be two of the greatest minutes in How I Met Your Mother history that did not happen on the show. No one should be surprised that Neil Patrick Harris continues to be the epitome of awesomeness, but Segel’s performance in this duet was a happy surprise to many fans. It should not have been, as he performed for a theatre troupe during his college years.
How I Met Your Mother has been a popular program, mostly because of the real life situations the characters on the show find themselves in. Whether it is the tough task of forming a relationship and eventually a marriage, the topic of having children, and dealing with the death of friends or family. And just like their characters, the actors paralleled these situations in their own life. Neil Patrick Harris, in particular, saw a revitalization of his career and an exposure to a younger generation after entertaining an older one by playing the titular character on the television series Doogie Howser, M.D.
Inside the Actors Studio has been a popular topic lately, as only a few weeks ago, an old clip from the classic program surfaced that showed a young Bradley Cooper as an audience member asking megastar Sean Penn for advice on how the actor play certain roles. The show has been on the air since 1994 and has featured numerous actors and singers throughout its very long run. The How I Met Your Mother cast was one of the few ensemble guest appearances, which included the voice actors for The Simpsons, the cast of Glee and the members of Bon Jovi.
Harris and Segel were eventually overcome in a fit of laughter during their duet and were unable to complete “Confrontation”, but their performance up to that point deserved a standing ovation, which the studio audience and the rest of the cast happily provided. After nine years of entertaining audiences on camera, it should come as no surprise that the cast can be just as entertaining in person. The clip of the How I Met Your Mother cast singing Les Miserable should hold over fans until the series finale on Monday.
