Miley Cyrus is recording the iconic song by The Beatles “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” with Wayne Coyne, the frontman of The Flaming Lips. Also included singing the song is MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden.
What made Miley Cyrus and the rest of the trio think that recording a song by The Beatles was a good Thing?
What made Miley Cyrus, 21, Wayne Coyne, and Andrew VanWyngarden think that recording “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” by The Beatles was a good thing? Perhaps it had to do with the extreme amounts of pot they were smoking at the time.
According to Coyne, Beatles and John Lennon fans are “gonna love this track!” Who knows? Perhaps it will turn out to be halfway good; but, the very thought that Miley Cyrus is recording a song by The Beatles has some Beatles fans already pissed off at the idea.
The Instagram comments from fans of The Beatles mention things like that Wayne should commit a sexual act with himself, and that none of the three “are worthy (especially Miley) of singing even one word of that song.” Another person wrote that his life was ruined when he heard the news about the collaboration.
This isn’t the first time that Miley Cyrus has performed with Wayne Coyne. Just last month, during Miley’s show at the Staples Center in L.A. which was a part of her “Bangerz” tour, they sang The Flaming Lips’ song from 2002 “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1.” But, singing about “pink robots” is one thing; singing a song by The Beatles is quite another.
As Miley Cyrus is currently in the middle of her “Bangerz” tour, she probably won’t be releasing the collaboration anytime soon. The “Bangerz” album was just released last October, so she will likely want to hold off and include their version of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” on her next album, if it ever sees the light of day anywhere.
Miley Cyrus might not be the one to release the album. The Flaming Lips haven’t released a studio album in practically a year, so perhaps they will include the song on their next album. Their last one, “The Terror,” went on sale last April.
In a 2004 magazine interview, Sir Paul McCartney confirmed that “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” was about taking LSD, despite what John Lennon has said to the contrary about it just being a coincidence that the initials happened to be the acronym for LSD.
News of the Miley Cyrus collaboration with Wayne Coyne and Andrew VanWyngarden broke this past Friday, when Miley also revealed that she had a new tattoo, one of the face of a sad cat, on the inner part of her lower lip. That might have also seemed to be, at the time, a good idea to her.
Miley Cyrus is a pretty good singer, and her “Bangerz” album did hit Billboard’s number one spot not that long ago. I won’t, though I’m a die hard fan of The Beatles, entirely rule out the possibility that her version of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” with Wayne Coyne and Andrew VanWyngarden might be good — I’ll reserve judgment until I at least hear it.
But, I’d like to read your opinions on if Miley Cyrus and the other two had a good idea when they decided to record a song by The Beatles, or if it was one of their worse ideas ever. Please leave your comments below!
