In a surprise turn of events, information revealed from court documents that were in the public domain and declassified in 2010 but were still neglected, have revealed that the FBI had contact with Osama bin Laden through a human source or a mole placed within the Al-Queda leadership years before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This intelligence source had first met with bin Laden eight years before 9/11 and had met him again in 1993 and 1994. Crucial information about such operations were not only omitted from the 9/11 commission report and other official investigations released to the public but also have directly contradicted the intelligence community’s official stance that information about Osama bin Laden’s operations before 9/11 were mostly ‘cloudy.’ These court documents that were first published by the Washington Times this year and have been reconfirmed by NBC news pertain to an ongoing discrimination lawsuit filed by Bassem Youssef against the FBI.
Born in Egypt as a Coptic Christian, Youssef’s family had immigrated to America when he was still a child. He has had nothing but an illustrious career with the FBI. As the Unit Chief of the Counter Terrorism Division, he is now the highest-ranking American agent for the FBI who is of Arab descent and speaks fluent Arabic. In 1994, he was awarded the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal which is the most prestigious award bestowed in the intelligence community. This was for work done investigating the Al-Queda and establishing their links to terrorist attacks. Edward Curran of the FBI testified in court about Yousef exemplary work. In his suit, Youssef contains that despite his loyalties and distinguished service to the agency, he was passed up for a promotion because his seniors mistook him to be a Muslim.
This informant who according to Curran’s testimony was the only person with direct ties to Osama bin Laden through the Al Queda leadership, which was being investigated for their involvement with the 1993 World Trade Center terrorist attacks. He was of Sudanese descent and was the driver of the blind sheikh otherwise known as Omar Abdel-Rahman whom the FBI considers to be the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center attack. Sheikh Rahman and has been in federal custody for years before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Before becoming the Sheikh’s driver he was a known associate in the Sheikh’s circle and was turned over as an informant by none other than Youssef. In 1993, almost a decade before 9/11 this source who was in contact with the FBI revealed that Osama bin Laden was masterminding terrorist attacks on U.S soil. Bin Laden and was willing to finance and provide logistical support for such operations.
Information obtained by this live mole proved to be substantial enough to thwart at least two terrorist attacks in the early to mid nineties. The first was a Masonic lodge in the Los Angeles area and the second was a British cruise liner. Recent revelations about this informant have even surprised many U.S lawmakers. This news is significant because it not only disproves the FBI’s official narrative of the events that preceded the terrorist attacks on 9/11 but also by having to disclose that the agency had indirect contact with Osama bin Laden through an informant, the official sequence or timeline of events that occurred before 9/11 has proven to be erroneous.
