Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D is going to feature comedian Patton Oswalt very soon. Marvel Entertainment announced that Patton Oswalt will appear on the popular Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D television series as Agent Eric Koenig in a forthcoming episode of this season.
Patton Oswalt began his stand-up career in the late 80s-early 90s. The comedian would go on to land a recurring role on the hit television series The Kings Of Queens as Spencer Olchin, the innocent and nerdy friend to the Kevin James’ character Doug. Oswalt has also had recurring roles on Reno 911!, Justified, The Untied States Of Tara and Two And A Half Men. In 2007, Patton Oswalt lent his voice to the eponymous lead character in Disney Pixar’s Ratatouille and has been taking more and more dramatic roles as his career progresses. Patton starred in the very well received indie film Big Fan for which his performance was critically lauded. Juno and Up In The Air filmmaker Jason Reitman then cast Patton Oswalt to star along side Charlize Theron in the black comedy Young Adult. In the film, Oswalt gives an incredibly tender and nuanced performance as Matt Freehauf, a geeky cripple that strikes up a friendship with the horrible girl he could only admire from a distance in high school. Oswalt’s work in Young Adult received many best supporting actor nominations from various critic circles back in 2011.
Patton Oswalt has been cast to appear as Agent Eric Koenig on Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Koenig was created by Dick Ayers and Stan Lee and made his debut in February of 1966. Koenig first appeared in Sgt. Fury And His Howling Commandos #27 as a member of Nick Fury’s squad during World War II. The character, however, is likely to feature a different origin story when Patton Oswalt appears as Eric Koenig on Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.LD.
Created by Maurissa Tancharoen as well as Joss and Jed Whedon, Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D stars Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, an agent of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. After the battle of New York occurring in Marvel’s The Avengers feature film, the world has completely changed. Mankind is now not only aware of the superhero group The Avengers but also of the powerful and deadly forces that require the services of our heroes. Sometimes though even the big guys need a little help from the agents of shield. Phil Coulson is tasked with assembling and leading an elite covert team to find and deal with these threats wherever they are found. With a world rapidly becoming stranger and dangerous than before, these agents of Shield are ready to take on whatever they are up against. Rounding out the Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. ensemble are Chloe Bennet, Ming-Na Wen, Elizabeth Henstridge, Brett Dalton and Iain De Caestecker. The growing wheelhouse of supporting characters also recently added Bill Paxton to its ever-expanding roster.
Patton Oswalt’s appearance as Eric Koenig as one of the agents of shield continues Marvel’s efforts to build out their universe to be as full and dense as the ones featured in their books. Marvel’s Agent Of S.H.I.E.L.D. is in its first season and airs Tuesdays at 8 P.M. on ABC.
