Scrabble or Scribble?

Scrabble

Hasbro has decided to update its Scrabble game dictionary after nearly a decade.  It is asking public to send in the word nominations out of which, sixteen shall be chosen later this month using the bracket elimination method. Words like facebook, hashtag, wiki and selfie are expected to compete for the top spots. Scrabble is one of the top word games that help people in vocabulary building but, this change may mean a player could get away with a scribble. A ludicrous prospect isn’t it? Oh, sorry it is LOL right? By the way, LOL could make the cut too!

Scrabble is the most played board word game in the world. It is said that this game is played in one hundred and twenty-one countries around the world, accounting over 160 million boards. Scrabble is now available in  thirty different languages. The English Scrabble has one hundred tiles which, is the least number of tiles in any language. In the basic rules of the game, an opponent can challenge any suspicious word by the help of an English dictionary and as this game is a fascinating mix of vocabulary building and fun, an idea of a multilingual game can certain help in outscoring the opponent.

Originally the game was called Lexico and did not have a board, it was just played with tiles. In Scrabble tight spots are common but next time, look if the word caziques is possible. Dr. Karl Khoshnaw scored 392 points, the highest word score in a competition using that word that is a plural for West Indian chef. Most often players get stuck with just one tile, the fact is there are 124 two letter word combination possible leaving the letter V. Getting a horrid set of tiles in a new game is a common occurrence. Starting with a blasted luck with M,u,z,j,i,k,s letters on the rack? No worries, they form the highest word points for a first move. Muzjiks are Russian peasants and this formation gets a player of Scrabble one twenty-eight points right away! Who still has time to sit play scrabble, life is too  busy for it right? Online Scrabble is the way to go! In an hour across the world, approximately thirty thousand games are played.

Like Kelly Link interestingly notes, “Remember, when you don’t know what to do, it never hurts to play Scrabble. It’s like reading the I Ching or tea leaves.” Researcher of word games found that Scrabble helps preserve endangered languages. Lot of native dialects like the south Siberian dialect of Tuvan are revitalized by Scrabble and the experts also observed that  literacy rate shot up among those natives. Though manufacturing scrabble in a different language can lead to legal issues, as two companies have patented the concept.

A Scrabble word could be formed with only vowels or consonants, the longest being euouae which means Gregorian cadence and crwths which is an old Welsh string instrument. So why Scribble a futile OMG or an awful EW? For, Scrabble is all about “Live by the rules or die by the rules,” but not without an odd tweak!
