Rapper and member of Wu-Tang Clan, Andre “Christ Bearer” Johnson recently chopped off his penis with a steak knife before attempting suicide by leaping from the second story of a North Hollywood building. Miraculously, he survived the fall and did not bleed to death from the amputation injury. Sometime later, he was rushed to the hospital, however, Andre Johnson’s penis reattachment surgery failed.
The Wu-Tang Clan member was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles without his penis. Shortly afterwards, his penis arrived and surgeons attempted to reattach it; however, the surgery was not successful. While no further details were given as to why Johnson’s penis reattachment surgery was a failure, it could be because the penis was contaminated in some way or simply that it had been removed from the body for too long. When tissue or body parts of any kind are removed from the body, they will quickly become necrotic and begin to die and decay. When a limb or other body part, in this case, the penis, is dismembered from the body, immediate emergency medical assistance is needed in order for the reattachment to be a success.
This incident has left many people asking why Johnson would do something so heinous to his body: chop off his own penis and then jump from a building in an attempt to snuff out his life, and now, a few different possibilities have come to light. One, he may have been under the influence of drugs, and two, he may be suffering from mental illness. Which one is it? Could it be a combination of the two?
Different sources point to different answers. One source said Johnson was using PCP, otherwise known as Angel Dust or Phencyclidine, at the time he chopped off his penis and leaped from the building. However, another source said he was not under the influence of any drugs but instead, he was suffering from mental problems. No one knows the truth about what was really going on with Johnson at the time of the incident or what his true motivations were for acting in such a way except the rapper himself.
However, Dr. Doron Stember, the assistant professor of urology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City said if Johnson was suffering from a mental condition, he may in fact “try to reinjure himself” and may have more problems as he tries to recover from the ordeal. Stember went on to say that, people who try to mutilate themselves and attempt suicide will need “prolonged intensive psychiatric care” in the aftermath of such an incident in order to ever be able to recover.
To date, there have been no reports as to what surgeons plan to do now that Andre Johnson’s penis reattachment surgery has failed. However, Stember said there are a few different options. Surgeons may tunnel his urine channel below his scrotum, which would allow him to urinate in a seated position, or they could try to reconstruct the phallus. This would be completed sometime later using tissue most likely from his forearm. Sexual function would probably be nonexistent; however, the reconstruction surgery would allow Johnson to urinate while standing up and would give him a better appearance cosmetically.
