Not only is Barbie getting a movie, but now Jem and the Holograms is being turned into a live-action film with Audrey Peeples cast as the main character. The 20-year-old actress is best known for her role as Nashville’s Layla Grant, but this will be her first major role on film.
In fact, most of the cast are relatively new to Hollywood, and are probably hoping that this will be their lucky breaks into movies. The entire four-piece band has been cast, with Aurora Perrineau, Stefanie Scott and Hayley Kiyoko named for the roles that many young girls in the 1980s could only dream of playing.
The idea for the movie was announced back in February, and delighted many who loved the cartoon. The main concept is that it will follow the cartoon, but as a live-action movie; taking the audience through the lives of Jerrica Benton, her sister and friends as they become Jem and the Holograms. Jon M. Chu was announced as the director, who has taken other toy line and cartoons onto the big screen with G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and is working with Bloomberg Productions.
While the idea behind the new movie will stick to the 1980s setting of a record company owner by day, rock goddess by night, the cartoon will get an upgrade for the movie. Peeples being cast as the main character in Jem and the Holograms movie means that younger audiences will definitely tune in, and writer Ryan Landles needed to create a script that will appeal to them. There are promises of modern-day technology and social media, as well as the original magical and scientific components of the show.
Fans have already been asked to share their own ideas, and the script is now complete. The storyline involves Jem and her Holograms to travel around Los Angeles as they try to understand the message her father left her before he died. It involves love, mystery and comedy to entertain all viewers.
The idea to get fans involved has already proven successful. Many fans of the original show shared their artwork, which has been shared on Tumblr. Some have shared costume ideas, song ideas and even script ideas. It really helps to create a movie that everyone will come to love, and certainly brings the idea of social media use in the movie to life.
The four girls cast as the band may be new to movies, but they have all appeared on TV. Peeples has had a few roles on Necessary Roughness and Grey’s Anatomy before landing the role of Layla on Nashville. Scott is known for her role on A.N.T. Farm on the Disney Channel, and will play Jem’s sister Kimber. Perrineau has appeared on Pretty Little Liars in one episode, but has also had one film role on A House Is Not a Home. She will play Aja, while Shana will be placed by Kiyoko, who has been on The Vampire Diaries, Wizards of Waverly Place and The Fosters.
It will be an exciting time for fans of the 80s cartoon, especially now that the cast has been named and the script written. There are still many others to be cast for the movie, but at least the main Jem and the Holograms characters have been cast with Peeples as the title character.
