The second leg of the Champions League matchup between Bayern Munich and Manchester United was an absolute thriller. United struck first, but Bayern showed their dominance and scored three uncontested goals to win 3-1, and go through to the semifinals on an aggregate score of 4-2.
The first 25 minutes of the match were completely dominated by Bayern as United looked content to sit back and defend. It was an interesting strategy for United to play the counter attack game, considering they had to score at least once to progress, since Bayern scored an away goal at Old Trafford. With that said, the defending was quite well done as Bayern had a lot of possession but very few clear-cut chances. The Germans began to get very frustrated by how hard the defense was to break down, and it started to show on their faces and in their body language toward the end of the first half.
Early in the second half United started to play with much more urgency, as they knew they had to score to move on. In minute 57, they broke through when Valencia pulled it back and Patrice Evra blasted the ball in off the crossbar; an amazing long-range effort. The crowd at the Allianz Arena was completely stunned and grew almost silent, but only seconds after the United goal, Mario Mandzukic equaled the score with a header that brought the crowd right back to life. These goals brought incredible energy into the match pace became very fast and the two sides began to exchange chances.
In minute 67, Bayern Munich’s scored their second goal with a centering ball from Arjen Robben finding Thomas Muller in the middle, who finished it off. With that goal the pressure was put back on the English side, and they were forced to go into all out attack mode. Quickly after the inclusion of United’s super sub Javier Hernandez Bayern got back on the counter attack, and Robben put in the dagger goal off a slightly deflected left footed shot. United were never able to get back into a rhythm, and Bayern just kept pushing and trying to score making sure the result would stand.
Even though this match was an absolute thriller and Bayern only won by two goals on aggregate, this was the result that was expected. As the reigning European champions the Bavarian side could be the first team to repeat in the Champions League era. It will be a tough task but they showed today they are up for any fight brought to them. Now Bayern will look on to the semis and see three very formidable opponents in Chelsea, Real Madrid and surprise quarterfinal winners Atletico Madrid.
In thrilling fashion Bayern Munich showed their dominance to the world today as they defeated Manchester United 3-1 in Munich. Going into the semifinals of the Champions League the German side will most definitely be favorites to take home the trophy. Though the four teams for the semis are now decided they do not know who they will face as UEFA has made the decision to draw for the matchups, which is a new change implemented this season. Whatever the matchups the next round is set up to be very exciting just as this year’s quarterfinals turned out to be.
