Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose May Make Team USA

Derrick Rose

Team USA wants to give the Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose a chance to make the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup Basketball squad. Rose has sat out most of this NBA season recovering from knee surgery.

The chairman of USA Basketball, Jerry Colangelo, is interested to see on where the Bulls injured star is in his recovery. Rose will get the chance to work out at the Team USA camp to see if he is healthy enough and ready to play. If the Bulls guard seems strong enough to be competitive, then he will have the opportunity to try out for the World Cup team.

In November of 2013 Rose had surgery to repair his right knee. This forced Rose to sit the rest of the season. The point guards rehabilitation has been going well since then. Rose has bounced back from the surgery well and has already started running and recently has been able to participate in some of the Bulls drills during practices.

The chance to make Team USA may be just the shot in the arm that both Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls need. Rose will be watched very closely by USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo during the summer. Making sure that Rose is not only healthy and ready to play, but also making sure he can play. Rose has not played in a competitive basketball game since the loss in November to Portland, and the point guard has not competed in a full NBA season since 2011-12.

The fact that Rose, who was a starter for the Team USA during the 2010 FIBA World Championship, has not played all season and has suffered from injuries for the past few years and is still sparking interest from USA Basketball should be very encouraging to both the Bulls and fans. Team USA wants to win every tournament they participate in and it appears that healthy Rose would be an important part of the World Cup roster.

If Rose performs well at the training camp and makes the roster, Chicago fans will get a chance to see their injured star play before the World Cup starts in late August in Spain. USA Basketball announced that on August 16 Team USA will host Brazil in an exhibition game at the United Center in Chicago. It would be the first chance for Rose fans to see the hometown hero play competitively.

If Derrick Rose makes Team USA and have a strong showing, it may be more important to the Chicago Bulls. Seeing their superstar point guard healthy and competitive would give the Bulls a strong sense of security that the team could be at full power for the next season. A healthy Rose along with an ever improving Joakim Noah and the rest of the current team that is performing well in the absence of their point guard will make the rest of the NBA take notice. Add in a good draft for the Bulls and this could be the beginning of something special in Chicago.
