Even with helicarriers raining from the sky, the Triskelion being reduced to rubble, and S.H.I.E.L.D. left in ashes after a hostile take over by Hydra, Maria Hill is ready for a bit of small-screen action. Former How I Met Your Mother star, Cobie Smulders, is headed back to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to reprise her role as the tougher-than-nails Maria Hill to wrap up the first season of the ABC drama. Smulders will not be returning alone, as she will be joined by veteran actor, Samuel L. Jackson, who will star in the season finale as former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury.
This past Tuesday’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was one of the best of the season, as the plot picked up after the earth-shattering events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. There are spoilers ahead, so any readers not having seen the film or the latest episode should not continue reading.
In the latest Captain America movie, audiences learned that S.H.I.E.L.D. haS been infiltrated by Hydra, and that just about everyone and their brother’s uncle was actually a double agent, working for the terrorist organization founded by the Red Skull in the first Captain America film. Smulder’s character helped Captain America and his gang of freedom fighters expose the infiltration and put a stop to a mass murder plot using a fleet of helicarriers that would have made any fascist dictator smile with glee.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. picked up right where the Captain America sequel ended, with Agent Coulson and his team discovering that Hydra is now calling the shots and that S.H.I.E.L.D. has fallen. The twists and turns in the well crafted plot continued on as viewers learned that Agent Garrett was the Clairvoyant, who had help from Agent Ward, who it also appears was a secret member of Hydra. With everything going up in flames, it will be interesting to see what type of roll Smulders will play in tying up all of the loose ends presented by this huge turn of events.
Some fans are speculating that the reason Cobie Smulders is headed back to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is to help Coulson and his team establish a new organization geared toward taking Hydra down. At the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Maria Hill is seen applying for a job at Stark Industries, the company owned by Iron Man himself, Tony Stark. Perhaps this an early set up for the second season of the series which will lead up to the events of the highly anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron film due out May of next year. Perhaps Smoulder’s alter ego will be assisting Nick Fury in helping the remnants Coulson’s team in establishing the Avengers as their own independent organization. The sky is the limit at this point.
Marvel has truly accomplished something unprecedented with their cinematic universe, tying a seamless story arch across two different mediums, each one complementing and building on the other. Every movie and every episode of the television show is connected and continually moves the story and characters forward. Now that Cobie Smulders is headed back to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it will be interesting to see what connections from the Captain America film she might bring over to the small screen with her.
