With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 mere weeks away, Columbia/Sony Pictures has announced that they have found a director for their planned The Sinister Six film. The Amazing Spider-Man spin-off The Sinister Six will be written and directed by The Cabin In The Woods filmmaker Drew Goddard.
The sinister six are a name given to an ensemble of super-villains from Spider-Man’s rogues gallery. The first appearance of the sinister six was in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 back in January 1964. In the storyline, the group was put together by Doctor Octopus and consisted of Kraven The Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman, Electro and The Vulture. Since then, pretty much every single major Spider-Man super-villain has at one point or another been a member of a version of the sinister six. In Marvel comic book lore, there have been roughly ten incarnations of the evil team including a sinister seven and sinister twelve. The most recent appearance of the super-villain team came back in 2013 when a Doctor Octopus’ mind was inside Peter Parker’s body and organized what he referred to as the superior six debuting in Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #5. No plot details have been announced for director Drew Goddard up-coming The Amazing Spider-Man spin-off film adaptation of The Sinister Six.
Filmmaker Drew Goddard was previously announced to be simply the front-runner for the director position after he was attached to draft the script for The Sinister Six. Goddard got his start as a writer on the long-running television series Buffy The Vampire Slayer before going on to work on one of the biggest shows of the past decade, Lost. Goddard has also scripted episodes for Angel and Alias as well as the feature-length found-footage monster movie Cloverfield. In 2012, after several delays, Lionsgate released Goddard directorial debut The Cabin In The Woods. The horror-satire, co-scripted by The Avengers filmmaker Joss Whedon, received near universal critical praise and grossed over $66 million worldwide off a modest production budget. Goddard next project will be featuring a different Marvel comics character in a very different setting as the filmmaker has been tapped to oversee a Daredevil series on Netflix for Marvel Studios. Drew Goddard has signed on to executive produce the thirteen episode series as well as write and direct the pilot. Daredevil will tie into three other upcoming Marvel Studios produced Netflix series based upon their original characters Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist before the four superheroes team-up for a mini-series known as The Defenders. The Amazing Spider-Man spin-off film The Sinister Six is expected to be director Drew Goddard’s big screen follow-up to The Cabin In The Woods.
Columbia Pictures has yet to announce a timeline for the up-coming spin-off film though many believe it will follow The Amazing Spider-Man 3. While things are far from set in stone, a few possible characters do pop-up in this summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with future super-villains rumored to be teased throughout the sequel as well. Both Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Paul Giamatti’s Rhino are strongly believed to be featured in the up-coming spin-off and it certainly would not be a surprise if the evil team itself is eventually formed by Spider-Man arch nemesis Norman Osbourne played by Chris Cooper in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or his son, Harry, played by Dane DeHaane.
The highly anticipated sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to swing onto the big screen on May 2nd while the third entry is currently scheduled to arrive on June 10th, 2016. The Amazing Spider-Man spin-off film, The Sinister Six, to be directed by Drew Goddard has no schedule release date.
