Rumor has it that Facebook is no longer in, but it seem someone forgot to inform Facebook of this information. To the world Facebook is the social addiction, it was the thing everyone tried because all the cool kids were doing it, but now has become the proverbial monkey on users back and it seems as if the habit just can not be kicked.
Now the question being asked over and over is what keeps the crowd coming back for more, let’s start with the “Like” button. Introduced in 2007, it gave Facebook the ability to start really understanding what the user was truly interested in and gave the user a fun new toy. With the knowledge of knowing that had struck gold in the eyes of the user, Facebook continued to expand on the like button, they started carefully distinguishing between the likes a post received before a users opened it from the ones it got after being opened. Even today, Facebook continues to monitor and improve on what the user like and want to see. But that is just one of the many ways Facebook is keeping an addictive hold on the social universe.
Look at the many acquisitions that Facebook has acquired within the recent years, or even the recent months. Their newest purchase, “Move”, the fitness-tracking app for Apple iPhones, designed to help improve a person’s understanding of their daily fitness activity. The purchase was definitely a smart move on Facebook’s end, regardless of the talks, Apple is still a dominant force in the technological world and any app introduced to their marker has the potential to go global. The purchase also adds to the fact that Facebook understands its users and strive to add the things they want and are interested in. Over half of the society struggle to stay fit and live healthier and this app is will help them achieve this; Facebook will help them achieve this. What does that do, that helps Facebook with the simple and popular “Like” button.
The same can be said about the purchases of the WhatsApp and Oculus VR Inc. WhatsApp his 500 million users after Facebook acquired it, a messenger service designed to support all devices for free for the first year and after that just a mere 99 cent annually afterwards. Once again Facebook knows what the user wants and using the social addiction to their advantage, while Oculus on the other hand will possible be an even more powerful move. If Facebook is the social addiction, their acquisition of Oculus has the potential of keeping them in business for a long time.
As stated before many claim that Facebook is no longer the in thing, but mix a bit of virtual reality in the mix and Facebook may be destined to change the face of social media forever. Even with that being said, Facebook still has competition and has not yet dominated the social media game board. Like Twitter, Facebook has been trying to develop a way to be a real-time news source, called FB Newswire. FB Newswire is a new service designed to help journalists and newsrooms to discovery, distribute, and embed newsworthy content from Facebook. Will it work, everyone will just have to wait and see, either way it will keep the drones securely attached to fold.
No matter how it is looked at, how it is played, Facebook is the social addition hand down. The younger generation claims to not use it anymore, stating it is a site more for their parent than them. But accounts are still being used, new users are still signing up and newsfeeds continue to be flooded with everything from games to social change. So is Facebook no longer in, maybe, well at least until next week when they acquire the newest piece of social media technology that the 13 to 24 year old demographic is currently into and then it is back to square one. “Hi my name is Virginia and yes Facebook is the social addiction and I am an addict.”
