Note: This contains spoilers for those who have not seen April 13’s episode of Game of Thrones. Do not read if you do not want to be spoiled!
One of the Game of Thrones actors has decided it is time to retire from acting. It likely is not anybody most would expect, either. And it is definitely not somebody many will want to hear about retiring.
It has been just three days since fans saw his character’s death, but Jack Gleeson has decided it is time to give up acting for good. The 21-year-old has been one of the characters everyone hated and wanted to see get his comeuppance, and he certainly did by being poisoned at his own wedding.
Gleeson is not new to the acting scene. He started acting when he was just eight years old, and has spent an enjoyable three years on the set of Game of Thrones. The Irish actor has decided it is now time to quit while he is ahead. He also admitted that he no longer enjoys doing it like he once did. That is probably one of the best reasons to give up acting. If he no longer enjoys it, he is not going to put the enthusiasm and effort into his characters.
Before now, Gleeson has always acted in his spare time and done it for fun. He now has the option to make it a living, but he wants to do something that he really enjoys. So, the Game of Thrones actor has decided to retire from acting, but he still does not know what he would like to do.
George R.R. Martin believes that the character of King Joffrey could have put the 21-year-old off the idea of acting for a living. Gleeson’s character was down-right evil, and the Irish actor definitely portrayed that and more. Martin believes Gleeson created a person everybody loved to hate, and it would be difficult for him to ever get rid of that persona now.
It certainly was not the character. After looking into a number of different interviews the young actor gave recently, it is clear that his love of fame and acting was not there. He spoke about how a celebrity status is “dehumanizing,” and expressed his hatred for fame. That would only continue if he went down the path of acting for a living.
At the moment, he is studying at Dublin’s Trinity College, but the academic world is not one that he enjoys either. A number of paths are open to him at the moment, but he is still unsure about which one to take. It is understandable. He has been drawn to acting for so long that he possibly never had a backup plan thinking that this would be the one thing that he would always like to do.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, he did joke about returning to acting. He mentioned that he would accept any script in 10 years when he is destitute. For now, the Game of Thrones actor is retiring from acting.
