*WARNING! Spoilers of Game of Thrones Season One – Three ahead.
Game of Thrones is nearly here and some brushing up needs to be done. With so many kings, squires, knights, peasants, realms, motivations, backstories, even the most diehard fans of the show can get confused. Here is a quick recap of what happened in the first three seasons to be ready for some more guts and nudity…only on HBO! Newcomers should steer clear of this article as major spoilers are ahead and it may not make a lot of sense.
Everybody’s favourite tomboy Arya Stark has been beaten, imprisoned, starved, captured again and left to fend for herself. Ever since she escaped King’s Landing after the beheading of her father Ned she has had nothing but bad luck. She has made friends along the way, such as Gendry, Hot Pie, Jaqer H’ghar (who had one of the coolest exits of any character), and the Lightning Lord. Being a high lord lady she is worth a bit for ransom, which is why the exiled Hound has taken her to The Twins in to exchange Arya to her brother Robb. More on him later on.
The silver-tongue devil Tyrion Lannister has been forced to marry Ned’s oldest daughter Sansa Stark. With Bran and Rickon supposedly dead, marrying Sansa will make Tyrion the next heir to Winterfell that is if Robb Stark is to die in battle. Robb, The King in the North has never lost a single battle, but unfortunately has lost many allies after beheading Richard Karstark (heads will roll in this show… literally). If Robb is to fall, the Lannister will be in possession of almost all the greatest of the seven kingdoms.
Davos Seaworth the Onion Knight survived the Battle of Blackwater, and when he returned to Dragonstone he was imprisoned by his own king, Stannis Baratheon. Stannis has been allured by the sexy Red Priestess Melisander. Davos’ goal is to free Stannis of Melisandre and kill the her, before it is too late for his liege.
Jaime Lannister, the Kingslayer, Oathbreaker. He is being escorted back to King’s Landing by Brienne of Tarth in the hopes that his freedom will ensure Sansa to return to her mother Catelyn. Jaime had one of the most surprising and emotional scenes in the entire series. The moment when the audience went from hating Jaime for pushing Bran off a balcony, to sympathising with him was when he was naked (psychologically and physically). He revealed why he killed the Mad King Aerys and why the name Kingslayer hurts him so much. He tried to protect King’s Landing and got blamed for it.
Now the moment that spawned a thousand reaction videos of fans screaming in horror: The Red Wedding. Never before has any single episode evoked such emotion from fans as the moment when you realised the beautiful couple Robb and Jeyne were not going to get a happily ever after. Not much to say about this really. Those who watch Game of Thrones will never forget this and those who have not seen it should not be robbed of the surprise.
The worst subplot by far was the torture scenes with Theon Greyjoy. This was nothing but torture-porn as there was no story development whatsoever. Everything that happens to Theon could have happened in one episode: he gets his privates cut off, and his sister bows to avenge him. The End. Let’s move on.
Beyond the Wall
Samwell Tarly the lovable chubby coward has proven himself to be quite the hero. Saving a woman and her child from the cold winter and White Walkers (snow zombies). He is on his way back to the Night’s Watch to warn everyone about the Walkers and how to defeat them, with a dragonglass dagger.
Bran Stark has learned he is a warg, someone who can mind-control animals. He decides that with Winterfell burned to the ground and made a cripple he must learn how to harness his powers. He is on his way to cross the The Wall to find a teacher.
Jon Snow, Ned Stark’s bastard, has gone to hell and back with the wildings. Acting as a double agent, he fools the wildings in believing he is one of them. Not all of it was a drag, as he got some alone time with Ygritte, the red headed archer, in a grotto were he got to see if the drapes matched the carpet. In a bloody battle, Jon manages to escape the wildings with three arrows stuck to him. Now he must get to The Wall and tell the Night’s Watch the wildings are near.
Across the Narrow Sea
Everything is coming up Daenerys. The Mother of Dragons has had nothing but the best luck this season as her army and dragons have gotten stronger and stronger. She allied herself with the Unsullied, an army of eunuch soldiers, and freed the people of Yunkai, who also joined her. Hopefully season four will show more badass scenes with those dragons.
Now that Breaking Bad is over, Game of Thrones is going to dominate everyone’s television time. The level of production would have been unthinkable five seven years. It is Lord of the Rings meets the Sopranos, and it is just as cool as it sounds.
