Ghostbusters III is once again rumored to be in production, but Ghostbusters III will never happen. Many fans of the franchise were excited to hear director Ivan Reitman announce that he is confirming that there will be a new Ghostbusters film earlier in March. This would seem like fantastic news to fans of the franchise, for the confirmation is coming directly from the man himself, Reitman. The confirmation did not come from some random blogger nor was it rumored around internet fan sites, the director himself has confirmed the news. Fans are excited, to them this is awesome news! But their excitement may be short-lived.
This is not the first time Reitman has confirmed that there will be a Ghostbusters III. Rumors of a new installment to the ghost-busting franchise have been around since the late 90’s, when Dan Aykroyd wrote a new script titled Ghostbusters 3: Hellbent. The script would never be filmed and ended up being used as the storyline for a Ghostbusters video game later on. In regards to Reitman himself, back in 2007 (doesn’t seem like long ago but check your calendars, that’s seven whole years) Reitman also “confirmed” that a new film was going to be made. This goes on every year since, literally every year till now Reitman has been confirming and re-confirming that a new Ghostbusters III is on its way.
Every year there is a new cast, a new director, a new something. 2014 is just another year of Reitman confirming, but Ghostbusters III will never happen. As the years progress, the chances of a new film become slimmer and slimmer. As much as Reitman wants this to happen, there just seems to be too many obstacles in his way. First and foremost there is the fact that a sequel to the classic 1984 hit comedy Ghostbusters has already been made. It was called Ghostbusters II, and it was not very good, Bill Murray himself was disappointed with the sequel. The film was nowhere near close to the financial nor critical success of the first film, and this was a time when Ghostbusters was still incredibly popular and the stars relevant. Many now question what chances of succeeding would a new sequel have over 20-years later?
This brings attention to another reason Ghostbusters III will never happen: Bill Murray will never, ever be in it. The bad taste of the first sequel has long lingered in his mouth and he has been highly outspoken over the years how he has absolutely no interest whatsoever in reprising the role. The recent death of Harold Ramis has only further driven Murray away from any chances of even reconsidering the possibility of starring in the new film. At one point there were rumors he would agree to be in it if his character were instantly killed off and turned into a ghost, but that also quickly turned into a big fat no for Murray.
At the end of the day that leaves us with just two original Ghostbusters characters, and the least favorite of the bunch. All this without mentioning the fact that the studio will not want to risk spending the 150-million it would take to make the film when the first sequel didn’t do well way back when the franchise was at its prime. No Bill Murray, no Harold Ramis, no studio finance, all fans have is Ivan Reitman’s confirmations to go with, which all boils down to one thing, Ghostbusters III will never happen.
