Could Gwen Stefani be The Voice’s new judge? When Christina Aguilera announced that she would not be retuning for the upcoming season of The Voice due to her pregnancy, the Hollywood music rumor bill began buzzing. Who could the show possibly procure to replace the blond diva with the incredibly distinctive voice? It turns the show likes to stick with that formula – the first time Aguilera took a hiatus, producers hired blonde songstress Shakira to replace her. This time around, Gwen Stefani is the potential Aguilera replacement on The Voice.
The singer is best known as the face of her band No Doubt as well as a very successful career as a solo artist. Her hit single “Hollaback Girl” even reached number one on the Billboard Charts. Married to fellow musician Gavin Rossdale, Stefani is also known for her popular fashion line. She would not be the first replacement judge to grace The Voice, however.
When the show began, the four judges were Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine, country singer Blake Shelton, hip-hop artist Cee Lo Green, and Aguilera. After the third season both Aguilera and Green decided to take a season off to focus on their own music, so a search went underway for their replacements. Again, the producers looked for someone of a similar type, subbing Shakira for Aguilera and fellow hip-hop artist Usher for Green for season four.
Aguilera and Green returned for the fifth season, while Usher and Shakira took the sixth. The seventh season of The Voice is the one Aguilera will be sitting out, and the one Stefani will be the potential replacement for. She will not be the only new face in the judge’s chairs, as Cee Lo Green also announced that he too would not be retuning to the show. While Aguilera is taking a year off because she is expecting a child, Green has announced that he is simply ready to move on to other projects. Staying true to form, the producers decided to find another hip-hop artist, and have signed Pharrell Williams to replace him. Williams is having the biggest hit of his career with his single “Happy”, a song that also got him nominated for an Academy Award. This would make the season seven line up Levine, Shelton, Williams, and Stefani – though it is worth noting that NBC will not yet confirm that the former No Doubt front woman has been hired. Earlier this month rumors were swirling that singer Jewel would be the one tapped to fill Aguilera’s seat.
Despite the constant rearranging of the judges, the musical competition show’s success has not faltered. Despite speculation that the show would suffer when Aguilera and Green left back in season four, the show stayed consistently successful. In its current season, though The Voice’s ratings have been lower than previous years, it is still consistently the top-rated show on evenings when it airs. It seems safe to say that whether or not Stefani is the potential Aguilera replacement on The Voice, the show will keep managing to find success.
