Zack Snyder will be directing the upcoming Justice League film after he has completed Batman vs. Superman. News of a Justice League movie has been rumored for years, and now with the massive success Marvel studios has had with their The Avengers franchise, Warner Bros. will try the same formula with their DC counterparts.
Warner Bros. has approached superhero films as stand-alone versions in the past, their most successful and popular is their Batman franchise. The 1989 Tim Burton revival of the iconic comic book character took the world by storm, it became a pop cultural phenomenon and was immensely successful both critically and financially. Various sequels followed, although each one less and less successful, with the last version being considered one of the worst films of all time. The comic book character on film was all but dead until the 2005 hit Batman Begins completely took the character and the genre in a whole new direction, all thanks to visionary director Christopher Nolan. The 2008 sequel The Dark Knight became one of the best critically acclaimed films of the past 20 years and also ended up in the top 10 highest grossing films of all time. Nolan ended his trilogy in 2012 with The Dark Knight Rises, and Warner Bros. was already thinking of ways to keep the momentum going by having Nolan write and produce a reboot of Superman.
Nolan choose Zach Snyder to direct the 2013 Superman reboot titled Man of Steel, and with the success of that film Snyder will return to direct Justice League after he is complete with the Man of Steel sequel, Batman vs. Superman. Justice League will be the culmination of multiple superhero characters in one film, much like The Avengers. So far the characters known to be in the new Justice League film will be Batman, Superman, Wonder-Woman and Cyborg, all who will also be featured in the upcoming Superman vs. Batman. Even though Nolan will be producing, these new films will not be canon to his Batman trilogy. The new Batman will be played by Ben Affleck, a decision that has received much controversy. Wonder-Woman will be played by Fast & Furious actress, Gal Gadot and recently it was announced that Ray Fisher will play Cyborg. Henry Cavill will once again reprise his role as Superman. Rumors are that Matt Damon is in talks to play Aqua-man, which in the new Justice League will be re-imagined as a more barbarian type character.
All this is Warner Bros. answer to bring back Batman to the big screen, for the past eight years Batman has been one of Warner Bros. most successful franchises and Batman vs. Superman, as well as Justice League is their way of keeping the character alive while also trying to make other DC characters more popular as well. Snyder will certainly have the struggle of balancing such iconic characters in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman and even more so with Justice League. Marvel had the benefit of introducing each character in their own film before doing a mash-up in The Avengers, Warner Bros. is trying to speed up the process by introducing most of the characters in Batman Vs. Superman to later bring them back in Justice League. Although rumors are some of the characters will get their stand alone films after Batman vs. Superman. Zack Snyder will direct Justice League after Batman Vs. Superman, the films will be released a year apart from each other with Batman vs. Superman coming out in 2016 and Justice League in 2017. If done right, Justice League has the potential to be the biggest film experience of all time, in Snyder and Nolan all must trust.
