Singer Lana Del Rey has officially hit number 17 on the Billboard Top 100 this week with her new hit, ‘West Coast’, making the song the second biggest success of her career in the U.S.. ‘West Coast’ is the first single released off of the singer’s latest album, ‘Ultraviolence’, where Del Rey is making her return with a whole new set of the melancholy, dark, sweet, and sad songs that made her famous. The new album is due out next month. Its release was announced at the premiere of Del Rey’s short film, Tropico.
Del Rey’s previous and breakout album, ‘Born to Die’, was a major success, despite mixed reactions to it. Released in January 2012, it was the fifth best-selling album globally, selling nearly three and a half million copies. The song ‘Summertime Sadness’ off of the album was remixed by Cedric Gervais last year. With its fast techno beat combined with Del Rey’s vocals, the remix quickly became an instant radio and club hit. It went on to sit at the number 6 spot on the Billboard Top 100, became Del Rey’s highest charting single, and still is to date. The two other well-known tracks off of ‘Born to Die’, which were ‘Video Games’ and ‘Born to Die’, did not do as well, with ‘Video Games’ only managing to hit the number 91 slot. It might be speculated that Del Rey’s new hit being the second biggest U.S. success of her career has some to do with the fact that its been over two years since she released a studio album, and fans were anxiously waiting for new material to appear. However, in the interim between her albums, Del Rey did release a couple of short films, both of which were met with mixed reviews.
In addition to preparing for the release of her new album, Del Rey has been out on the road for her latest tour. She will next be visiting New Orleans on Friday, followed by Miami on Sunday. People are also buzzing about a single she recorded that was released at the beginning of the year for the upcoming Disney film, Maleficient, a spin-off of the older Disney classic, Sleeping Beauty. The film will star Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning. Del Rey re-recorded the classic ballad, ‘Once Upon a Dream’ for the trailer of the film, giving the lighthearted love song a dark and spooky twist that has gotten the movie, set to be released in May, a lot of attention already.
Although the ‘West Coast’ track has already been released in the United States, and is also available globally to be streamed online, it will not be officially released in the U.K. until May 18. Del Rey’s new video for ‘West Coast’, which was shot on a Los Angeles Beach, is set to premiere at some point this week.
In a week, Del Rey has already managed to sell has already managed to sell an impressive 110,000 copies of ‘West Coast. Listen to the second biggest success of her career so far in the video above.
