Magic Mike fans are rejoicing with an actual date for the long-awaited sequel, Magic Mike XXL. Next summer’s hottest movie will open on July 3, 2015 and is expected to surpass all 4th of July holiday box office records. A million horny housewives can’t be wrong.
Magic Mike, the stripper we were all rooting for, was a tremendous box office success back in the summer of 2012, taking in over $113 million domestically. Channing Tatum starred as the gorgeous title character, a man who dabbled in construction, furniture building, and, of course, stripping. The role was a breakout one for Tatum, who had previously been relegated to guest starring roles. Tatum’s own stripper background provided plenty of insider information. And he played the part to perfection. The original movie was directed by Steven Soderbergh and also starred newby Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, and Joe Maganiello.
Tatum is giving us all a sneak peak at Magic Mike XXL, saying that instead of taking place in a Florida nightclub, the movie will take place on the road. Calling it a classic road trip movie, Tatum says they want to make this a light, fun movie. There was a small bit of dark drama in the original Magic Mike which Tatum says surprised a lot of people. Magic Mike XXL promises to show a lot of ridiculous fun scenes, stuff you wouldn’t normally see in a movie. The movie is said to be a terrific balance of ridiculousness and reality.
Channing Tatum is once again producing the movie and even had a hand in the screenwriting along with Reid Carolin. It seems as though the entire cast will be coming back for Magic Mike XXL, although Tatum is saying that not all the deals have been set.
The super buff Tatum has been keeping himself very busy this past year. In addition to Magic Mike, the actor has completed work on the sequel to very popular 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, which opens on June 13th, in addition to his first sci-fi film co-starring with Mila Kunis, Jupiter Ascending, which is scheduled to open on July 18th. And it is being reported that he has met with producer Lauren Shuler Donner about possibly starring as Gambit in the upcoming X-Men spinoff, X-Men: Days of Future Past. Not to mention the fact that he became a father for the first time last year.
Magic Mike XXL may have some serious box office competition next year, as the summer of 2014 looks to be ripe with blockbuster movies. Some of the contenders are Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron coming out on May 15, the Despicable Me spinoff titled The Minions, coming out July 10, and Jurassic World, the long-awaited sequel to Jurassic Park, coming out on June 12. So far, the biggest competition seems to be in the form of Terminator: Genesis, the fourth movie in the Terminator sequel.
With well over a year to wait until Magic Mike XXL hits the theaters movie goers will have plenty of opportunities to see Channing Tatum light up the big screen this summer. As always, clothing optional.
