The Nike release of a new four minute long commercial for the upcoming World Cup in Brazil this summer is full of dreams. The commercial depicts a group of children dreaming about being their favorite players, who just happen to be Nike sponsored athletes.
Nike has really scored a goal with the commercial. A group of kids is getting ready to play a game on a soccer field in a small park when the decision that the winner stays on turns the game into a fantasy. One of the kids decides that if the winner stays on, then he is Cristiano Ronaldo, and then the fun begins.
The kids start transforming into Nike football athletes on the small field as a crowd starts to grow as the fantasy continues. After Ronaldo scores a goal the small field transforms into a giant stadium with tens of thousands of fans cheering on the mix of kids and athletes.
With the World Cup coming this summer, the release of this new commercial full of dreams by Nike should appeal to all sports fans. Whether kids grew up playing baseball in a vacant lot or playground basketball, or soccer games where ever they could, dreaming that they were their favorite player, imitating the way they played, has been going on for a long time. Nike has taken these dreams of kids pretending they are superstar athletes and they put them into this four minute long fantasy.
The soccer stars that Nike brought in are some of the top athletes in their sport. Besides Ronaldo, the soccer playing kids transform into various Nike sponsored players like Neymar Jr., Eden Hazard, Andrea Pirlo, Mario Götze, Thiago Silva, Thibaut Courtois, Wayne Rooney, Gonzalo Higuaín, Gerard Piqué, and many others. The commercial really turns into a all-star fantasy game quickly.
The fantasy part of the commercial really comes to life during a corner kick. With the all-star soccer players trying to push in front of the goalkeeper, still a kid, he transforms into the Incredible Hulk and snatches the ball out of the air. Another kid tells him that he can not be the Hulk. This is a jab at Brazilian National Team player Givanildo Vieira de Souza who is known in the soccer world as Hulk. Mizuno sponsors de Souza, not Nike, so the kid transforms into Team USA goalkeeper Tim Howard.
A number of non-soccer stars also make an appearance in the commercial. After Italian National Team member Andrea Pirlo takes a ball to his head off of a free kick, he is seen sitting in the stands talking to the Los Angeles Lakers Kobe Bryant. Two stadium workers argue a call on the field and transform into Mixed Martial Arts stars Jon Jones and Anderson Silva and start fighting with each other. Ronaldo’s girlfriend, model Irina Shayk also makes a brief appearance.
Nike continues their trend of of large scale commercials before the World Cup packing the advertisement full of players making up a dream team of epic proportions. The Beaverton, Oregon company has set the bar high once again with this epic commercial going into the tournament in Brazil this summer.
