Pinterest is slowly rising in the ranks to be the top used social media site. Similar to Tumblr it is a place anyone can get lost in it for hours. Pinning things like a favorite recipe, or a favorite pair of shoes to purchase. Recently surveys were done, and according to The Pew Internet and American Life Project, 73 percent of U.S. adults use social media sites and 21 percent of those use Pinterest. The data between 2012 and 2013 suggest that it is the fastest growing social media site, with a six percent increase. During that same time Facebook and Instagram only increased a mere four percent in comparison. This kind of growth would suggest that Pinterest could be the next social star.
Data from Pew has shown that it is about more than the numbers, this is proven by the increase in interest over Facebook. Also, the pinning site beat out Twitter for number three most popular site, which is a feat all by itself. The fact is Ben Silbermann owner of Pinterest has made it known they are not looking to be the next Facebook, but to be the next Google instead. That is a big goal of this small company. This inventive site is all about inspiring searches, unlike Google, who is all about, factual answers. It seems they are catering to all of the artists, whether they are inspiring chefs or inspiring fashion icons.
Comparing this pinning site to other social sites, is like saying Google is the next social star of sites, there is really no comparison. Both sites operate on a completely different scale. The power is in the hands of the people on Pinterest, while Google is more about the analytic side. Think of it this way, Google is the right brain, while the pinning site is the left side. One side is creative, while the other uses logic.
A big thing for this pinning site is in 2013, they grew in leaps and bounds in the retail area, claiming up to 41 percent of e-commerce traffic. The average person who uses this pinning site has an average income of 100,000 a year in income. So, with over 70 million on this site, other social media sites should be looking for ways to bring back the retail area back to their side. When retail is on the same side most likely the numbers are going to increase, which will bring more revenue for this pinning site. It is obvious this is the next social star of the year. Based on performance Pinterest, is the next star.
The only thing they may not have going for them is that only 17 percent of their users are male, while 83 percent is female. To be the next great social star Pinterest is going to have to figure out how to get men interested in the site. Since, only 33 percent is focused on technology, this may be the perfect outlet to get men involved, by increasing Technology posts, it will probably close the gap between male and female ratio. Another, aspect that could be focused on is making a sports section for men, this would also increase the usage for men. Only time will tell if Pinterest will become bigger, or just another Myspace.
