Rita Jeptoo has become a three-time Boston Marathon winner, beating out Buzunesh Deba in a time of 2:18:57, a personal best and a course record. She is the seventh three-time Boston winner.
The 33-year-old Kenyan had a previous personal best time of 2:19:57, set at Chicago in 2013.
Shalane Flanagan was the first American, finishing in seventh place. She led the for about half of the race, setting the early pace and running the first mile in 5:11, but could not hold on through the Newton Hills at about 21 miles. Jeptoo broke away at the 23-mile mark.
