Rob Coy, Senior Pastor of Megacgurch Calvary Chapel in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, recently stepped down from that position of 30 years, as he confessed to having two extra marital affairs as well as being addicted to pornography. His actions have left him broken over his unfaithfulness to his wife and church.
The announcement shocked the 20,000 member church, yet as one of the members stated, we are a strong church. We will survive. We have other Pastors who will be able to step in and take over. Many of the church members are weeping not only for their own hurt, but for Pastor Rob, his wife Diane, and their two children. While no one in the church is calling for him to be “stoned,” Brian Craig, the producer of the Steve Kane Show on AM1470 WMNN told the Examiner that Pastor Rob was a very selfish man who indulged in his own personal desires and when he was caught, he abandoned his church.
In a standing room only meeting where 7500 people attended, Pastors read an apology letter written by Pastor Rob. Many have been hurt by his actions as well as disappointed which goes without question, because of the faith and trust they placed in Pastor Rob Coy was violated. One of his parishioners recalled him saying, Don’t place your trust in me because I am going to let you down. The world will could either see this as a cop-out for his moral failing, a fact based on where he came from before becoming a Pastor, or an eerie prediction of what was going t
No one is perfect and should the people of the world want to pick up rocks and stone Pastor Rob Pastor of Megachurch Calvary Chapel, who continues to be broken over his unfaithfulness to his wife and church, Jesus would have this to say: He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone. The Apostle James would have this to say if he were living today regarding this situation, We all stumble in many ways. It is quite possible the Rob Coy failed to reach out first to his wife and secondly to the church board about his addiction to pornography and the affairs because of shame. It is also quite possible that maybe he thought he could handle it and walk away whenever he wanted to. It is equally possible he felt that by confessing these sins, he was not as strong in the Lord as he thought he was. All in all, the bottom line is that he chose fear over confession until the burden of this weight became too much for him to bear. But people will probably see it as he chose not to be accountable until it was too late and the damage was don
No one is too far gone and beyond the reaches of God’s grace and mercy, as God is the God of 2 chances, 3rd chances, etc. If this scandal would have continued to go on as it was, more damage could have been done to those at that church. It is possible that Rob Coy remembered what 1 Peter 4:17 said, and the conviction of this broke him into true repentance. For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God. Rob Coy, Pastor of a megachurch, is a man broken over his unfaithfulness to his wife and church does not need pity, chastisement, or judgment. Pastor Rob needs prayer.
