Simon Cowell finally spoke up on his regrets with having an affair with Lauren Silverman. The X Factor star fathered a child with the New York socialite while she was still married to his friend, Andrew Silverman. Since then, Silverman left the real estate mogul to be with Cowell.
In an interview with UK’s Mirror, the 54-year-old talked about his remorse over betraying his friend. ” It is not something I am proud of or wanted to happen in terms of hurting anyone,” he said. “It just happened. You have to deal with it and man up to it.”
Cowell and his now-girlfriend welcomed their first child together February 14. They named the baby boy, Eric. He is the former American Idol judge’s first child, and Silverman’s second. She and her ex-husband have a seven-year-old son, Adam. Silverman divorced her husband in August 2013.
Before the birth of his son, Cowell and Silverman were hesitant to talk about the pregnancy. The socialite was still married at the time. A few weeks later, the X Factor judge talked about how excited he was to become a father. “I’m not brilliant with babies. I never know what to do,” he said. “But [once he’s older] I think I’ll be a good dad in terms of advice….”
Fatherhood has certainly changed Cowell’s stance on children. The 54-year-old was never afraid to publicly discuss his disdain for babies. “God, no! I could not have children,” he said in 2009. “If I had them here drawing on the walls I’d go nuts.”
Despite Cowell’s regrets on the affair, the arrival of baby Eric has been a blessing in the former American Idol judge’s life. Cowell has a new perspective on life, past mistakes and future endeavors. “You have to accept responsibility and the criticism,” he said. “All I can say is, my advice to you is if it happens to you, you just have to deal with it a day at a time and own up to your responsibilities.”
Before settling down with Silverman, Cowell was in a six-year relationship with entertainment correspondent Terri Seymour. The British TV personality seems to have become more of a family man since the birth of his child. “Maybe because it puts things in perspective having two people in my life who I am responsible for,” he said. “…. Now the house is full of people. It has become a home rather than a house.”
The affair Cowell regrets resulted in a very public divorce. Andrew Silverman filed for divorce, citing adultery in July 2013. The filing went public two weeks later after news broke that his then-wife was carrying Cowell’s child. Despite the betrayal, the real estate mogul has no negative comments against either Cowell or his ex-wife. Silverman continues to co-parent his seven-year-old son with his ex.”It was a very difficult time in my life,” the ex-husband said. “I learned a lot. I moved forward….. I learned a lot about myself as an individual, the importance of family. My focus has been on my son throughout the whole ordeal.”
