Representative Vance McAllister of Louisiana, a married father of five, was caught on CCTV footage kissing a female aide who is not his wife. That footage has now been published to the world.
On Monday, in Louisiana’s West Monroe, The Ouachita Citizen released a surveillance tape showing McAllister and 33-year-old Melissa Hixon Peacock, his scheduler, kissing in his office last year in December. They were both caught on an outdoor CCTV camera exiting the building, with Peacock appearing first followed by McAllister. They separated when they got to the driveway of the building.
Following the leaking of the story, McAllister’s office in Washington was locked on Monday. According to the roll call of votes, McAllister did not turn up for four votes Tuesday afternoon on budgetary matters. He also missed two votes Monday evening on another budget-related measure. A spokeswoman for McAllister stated on Tuesday that McAllister was with his family in Louisiana.
On Monday afternoon, Republican Congressman McAllister issued an apology statement. “There is no doubt I’ve fallen short and I’m asking for forgiveness,” said McAllister.
The occurrence happened in a Louisiana district office in Monroe. From campaign finance records, it has been discovered that both Melissa Peacock and her husband have been reliable monetary supporters of McAllister.
It has not been long since McAllister took office. He was the surprise winner of a special election in a Republican district in November to replace Representative Rodney Alexander, who resigned to take a position in the administration of Louisiana governor, Bobby Jindal.
On Tuesday, McAllister’s office announced that Peacock was no longer in his service, and that the congressman intended to stay in office and run for reelection for a full two-year term in November.
As Republican congressman Vance McAllister is known as a conservative Christian, his kissing a female aide video has created quite a stir among the people. He has close ties with the Robertson family of Duck Dynasty, and has been married to Kelly Duncan McAllister for 17 years, with whom he has five children. Their oldest child, 19-year-old Anna Claire Rogers, is attending the University of Louisiana in Monroe.
McAllister told a local newspaper on Monday night that he does not plan to resign from Congress following the release of the video showing the married congressman, who ran for office on a conservative Christian platform, kissing a staffer.
In an interview with The News-Star, the Louisiana lawmaker said that he plans to stand for reelection this fall, unless there is an outcry for him not to serve.
In polls, voters usually indicate that they are not much bothered by political extramarital affairs. Last year, a Business Insider poll found that only 28 percent of respondents would definitely stop supporting a candidate due to adultery.
Critics say that McAllister’s future depends profoundly on the circumstances of his particular case, not just general approval or disapproval of political adultery.
Vance McAllister’s kissing a female aide tape did not only put this congressman in big trouble but Peacock’s husband, Heath Peacock, is also severely aggrieved over this scandal. He has lashed out, saying his life has been “wrecked” by McAllister, according to a CNN report. Melissa and Heath Peacock have been married for six years and have a six-year-old son. The couple is now heading for divorce.
