The Hollywood entertainment industry woke up on Tuesday morning with the news that one of their own has been charged with the killing of his wife. Actor Michel Jace known for his role as “Julian Lowe”, a Los Angeles Police Detective on the FX television series The Shield found himself answering questions from real life LAPD detectives on the alleged homicide of his wife, April Jace.
According to reports, around 8:30 Monday night a call was placed to L.A. Police from a man who told law officials that he had just gunned down his wife. Arriving on the scene to a Hyde Park neighborhood in South Los Angeles, police discovered the 51-year-old Jace walking out of his home. Michael Jace was detained at the scene and questioned by authorities. Law officials report that the actor appeared very calm and showed little emotion throughout the ordeal that brought out many onlookers in the neighborhood.
Police say Michael Jace’s wife 40-year-old April Jace had just arrived home with their two sons from a baseball practice before the incident of an alleged argument started. April Jace was shot several times in the upper torso within 15 minutes of arriving home according to officials. The boys, said to be under the age of 10, were not harmed. Paramedics arrived on the scene and found the woman’s lifeless body in the hallway of the home and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Actor was placed in handcuffs for much of the night and by 3:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, Michael Jace was arrested and charged on suspicion of homicide. The two children who heard the shots ring out in the home have been place in the care of relatives.
Neighbors in the quiet community say both the actor and his wife who was a financial-aide counselor at Biola University lived a very modest family life, were very hands-on parents and brought no problems to the neighborhood. Investigators have revealed that Michael Jace was married previously and according to divorce papers, Jace had allegations of domestic violence cited in the documents. Divorce papers from 2007 show Jace’s ex-wife Jennifer Bitterman claiming the actor made threats to kill her over visitation of their son. In other incidents, according to court documents, Jace physically choked and slammed Bitterman into a wall.
Further findings by investigators uncovered that financial stress my have been a contributing factor to an argument that happened during the evening with Jace and his now deceased wife. According to records, Michael Jace had been going through financial hardship having filed for chapter 13 bankruptcy in 2011. Court papers reveal the actor owed back taxes, credit card debt and carried two mortgages on his property.
As well as his role on Shield, actor Michael Jace is remembered for roles in Southland, The Mentalist, CSI, Forest Gump, and Boogie Nights. Now charged with homicide, audiences will not be seeing Jace on the big or small screen any time soon. The actor sits in a jail cell with bond set for $1 million.
