The image that fans worldwide have been waiting for since the Batman vs. Superman film was announced has been a photo of Ben Affleck in the new Batman outfit. The director of the new film, Zack Snyder, posted the image via his Twitter account a day after giving fans a glimpse of the new Batmobile. Already the photo of Affleck in the new batsuit has gone viral, showing the true cultural power the caped crusader still has, and how it was a genius choice for Warner Bros. to add a new Batman to their Man of Steel sequel.
Warner Bros. is going toe-to-toe with Marvel, or at least trying to. Marvel has made film history in the world they have created with their comic book franchise by seting up individual super hero films and making them all part of the same canon universe and then bringing them together in one film as they did with the 2012 film The Avengers. The first line-up with Warner Bros. was the 2013 film, Man of Steel, which was about Superman, yet the film had easter eggs all over of Bruce Wayne existing in that world. They are now following that up with a sequel to the film, titled Batman vs. Superman, a coming together fans have waited decades to see on the big screen. With the massive success of Chris Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Warner Bros. was desperate to find a way to keep Batman and Nolan on their side. They had Nolan produce Man of Steel, and it was Nolan who choose Snyder to direct. But even though Nolan is producing, these new films and the new Batman will not be apart of the original Nolan trilogy. This is the reason Affleck was chosen – to make sure fans were not confusing this new Batman with the one Nolan created.
Fans were at an uproar when Ben Affleck was first announced to be the new Batman, not believing the famed actor/director could pull the role off. Affleck has to follow in the footsteps of Christian Bale, who by all accounts is the longest running actor to play Batman and the most successful at it. With the new, first look at Ben Affleck as Batman, fans are realizing they may have judged too soon. The same occurred when Heath Ledger was first cast as the Joker in the 2008 film The Dark Knight. Ledger ended up with a posthumous Academy Award for the role, and it is regarded as one of the finest performances ever seen on screen.
From the first look at Ben Affleck as Batman, fans will instantly note that the new batsuit is unlike any seen in a film before. The batsuit looks like that of an actual comic book, with a gritty, almost dirty, raw look and feel to it. Affleck fits well in the new suit, and has certainly gained muscle mass to portray the superhero, as is clearly seen in the image. The suit is most reminiscent of the Batman from the graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, which dealt with an older and retired Batman. Only time will tell how the new film will end up, but with the minds of Snyder and Nolan together, most fans can expect it to be one of the biggest and most exciting film experiences they have ever had in a movie theater.
