Bob Dylan has been a major American artist for over five decades and this summer his most popular original piece goes up for grabs. Many of Dylan’s songs remain hits today. His songs Blowin’ in the Wind and The Times They Are a-Changin’ were not only well listened to, but were anthems for anti-war movements. His influential song Like A Rolling Stone changed the way that music was written in the 60’s and in a few months it will go to auction.
Sotheby’s announced Thursday that the original lyrics, which were written in pencil on hotel stationery, will go up for grabs June 24th. Reports say it will go to a true Bob Dylan fan for one to two million dollars. The lyrics feature not only the version of the song that was publicly released, but also Dylan’s thoughts and alternate additions that did not make it into the song. Hand drawn art, marks the margins of the pages, and the red logo of the The Roger Smith Hotel is at the top. The song was written in the hotel, which is in Washington, D.C..
Dylan, still alive and performing, will be on tour in Europe during the auction. He continues to not only tour but to create and sell personal art on his site. Over his life time he has created 35 studio albums, 58 singles, 11 live albums, 10 albums in The Bootleg Series, as well as 30 compilation albums. He has received numerous awards including The Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the nations highest civilian honors.
His song, Like A Rolling Stone, was ranked at the top spot on Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. The hand written lyrics to this song, which are up for sale are not being sold by Dylan himself. They are currently in the possession of a private seller who had bought the them directly from Dylan in the past. They will not be the only Dylan item up for sale. Two pages from A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall will be in the auction, but are not expected to go for as large of an amount. Other former possessions from rock gods such as Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon will be present as well.
Dylan has over 50 years of performing and producing art. He has contributed many songs that changed not only the world of music, but American society as well. Creating his own style, Dylan’s music appears to still be relevant to music lovers today. He continues today to tour and do music the way he see’s fit. His newest albums are a mixture of country, blues and folk. Dylan is not only a musical man, but a family man as well. His son Jakob has also followed the artistic path, and is lead singer of The Wallflowers.
Dylan’s life seems to have been a rich one, full of achievements, and continuing to expand every day. A few million dollars may seem like a high price to pay for a few hand written pages, but the content has arguably molded music today. Four pieces of art filled paper may soon break the record for the most expensive rock manuscript. June 24th will tell if Bob Dylan will beat out Lennon in the sale of original words, and it will be interesting to see who walks away with this unique item.
