Today the hosts of the 2014 World Cup, Brazil, announced the roster they will be using in the competition. Not only are they the hosts for the first time since 1950, but also they will go into the competition as one of the favorites. The Brazilians will be hoping to win their country’s sixth World Cup in its history in front of their home fans, who are considered to be some of the most loyal and passionate fans in all of sports.
Manager Luiz Felipe Scolari made the Announcement of Brazil’s roster for the upcoming World Cup at a packed press conference in front of over 700 reporters. The roster is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar of Toronto FC, Jefferson of Botafogo, and Victor of Atletico Mineiro
Defenders: Dani Alves of Barcelona, David Luiz of Chelsea, Thiago Silva of PSG, Maicon of Roma, Maxwell of PSG, Marcelo of Real Madrid, Dante of Bayern Munich, and Henrique of Napoli
Midfielders: Oscar of Chelsea, Paulinho of Tottenham, Hernanes of Inter Milan, Willian of Chelsea, Fernandinho of Manchester City, Luis Gustavo of Wolfsburg, and Ramires of Chelsea
Attackers: Jo of Atletico Mineiro, Fred of Fluminense, Hulk of Zenit St. Petersburg, Bernard of Shakhtar Donetsk, and Neymar of Barcelona
The names were much to be expected as theses players have played a lot together over the past few years in different competitions and World Cup qualifying. Some notable exemptions were made like big names and fan favorites Kaka and Robinho, who have not been in the best of form recently, but some were hoping could still make the squad. Another notable absence is that of PSG attacker Lucas Moura, who is in form and has been rotated in with the group going to the World Cup, but for whatever reason he was left out for players Scolari feels more comfortable with.
The strength of this Brazil squad lies in the attack, which will be led by the very talented Neymar, who will no doubt be one of the most marketed faces of the tournament. Unlike previous Brazilian teams, this side lacks a bit flair outside of Neymar and fellow attacker Hulk. Players like Oscar and Willian of Chelsea will try to bring that, but the rest of the midfield is very workman like and will be very solid, but may not play like past teams for Brazil.
The defense will be a major question for this Brazil squad as the only truly reliable defender is Thiago Silva. Fellow defenders like Marcelo, Dani Alves, and David Luiz are all very talented but show their flaws, as they like to attack and not worry so much about being the last line of defense. It may work to their advantage as those players will have Silva to rely upon to clean up their messes. Silva has proven in his young career to be one of the worlds best central defenders.
Brazil will bring a very talented roster into this upcoming 2014 World Cup as they try to win it for the sixth time in their history. Being the host nation could be a blessing and a curse as they will play in front of their home fans every match, but will have extra pressure on them to perform to their peak abilities in front of a nation who adores soccer so much.
