Fans of Matt Smith know him best for his portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor. Terminator: Genesis will be in theaters next year and fans of both franchises will have the opportunity to see the Dr. Who protagonist in a prominent role in the next installment of the popular film saga, along with the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Smith’s acting career started in 2006 when he was picked to play Jim Taylor in the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) television adaptations of The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North, both of which were based off of award-winning books written by fantasy novelist, Phillip Pullman. Smith got more work from the BBC in 2007 when he was picked to play Danny in an original series entitled Party Boys. He also had a number of bit parts in movies, other television shows, and has done quite a bit of work in the theatre. In 2009 Smith was picked to play the doctor in the BBC’s outrageously popular science fiction series Dr. Who. Smith made waves in the media news when it was announced that not only would he play the next doctor’s incarnation, but also that he was the youngest version of the show’s protagonist to date. In 2013 he retired from his role in the show after making his final appearance as the Eleventh Doctor in the Dr. Who Christmas Day special The Time of the Doctor. His work as the Eleventh Doctor has earned him two awards from SFX for best actor and one award from the National Television Awards for his drama performance. In 2015, the star of Dr. Who will be cast in Terminator: Genesis.
It is not clear exactly what role Smith has been cast for in Terminator: Genesis, but whoever it is will share a connection with John Connor, who will be played by Jason Clarke. Clarke is best known for his work in the 2012 films Lawless and Zero Dark Thirty, as well as his performance last year in The Great Gatsby. Other cast members that are on board for the film include Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, and the big man himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Fans of the popular HBO drama Game of Thrones will recognize Emilia Clarke from her portrayal as Daenerys Targaryen. She is set to play John’s mother, Sarah Connor. Jai Courtney will be tasked with the role of resistance soldier Kyle Reese. As for the ex-governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, he will return to the franchise to play the role he has known since the original film in 1984, the role of the Terminator. Every fan knows that Schwarzenegger is no stranger to the Terminator franchise nor to playing the role of a time traveling robot. Due to the fact that Smith played a time traveler in his Dr. Who days, some fans speculated that his character in the Terminator could have a time travel nuance in the new film. Some fans took great pleasure in playing with the idea that he could be a new version of Skynet’s robot killers.
The press release of the former Dr. Who star being cast in Terminator: Genesis has come as good news to fans of both franchises. The new film started shooting in January of this year under director Alan Taylor, who also directed Thor: the Dark World. The finished product has a premier date set for July 1, 2015.
