Foxcatcher

Foxcatcher is an upcoming drama movie about Mark Schultz, who is an Olympic wrestler. Schultz has a very weird relationship with mentor, John du Pont, and his brother David Schultz, which puts him in a very unfortunately situation. The film starts Channing Tatum, Steve Carell, and Mark Ruffalo. Bennett Miller won Best Director for the film at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. The film hits theaters on November 14, 2014.

Mark Schultz is an Olympic wrestler and two-time World Championship winner. He was born in 1960, in the U.S. His younger brother, Dave Schultz, was also a wrestler and won an Olympic gold metal in 1984. More famous than the brother’s careers is their relationship to the insane millionaire, John du Pont. Du Pont was a mentor to Mark, and both brothers were a part of his “Team Foxcatcher” wresting team in Pennsylvania. Although du Pont never had much experience with the sport of wresting he was enamored with it, and even built a training gym in his Newtown Square mansion. On January 26th, 1996, du Pont shot and killed Dave Schultz while he was practicing for another Olympic bid on his grounds. Dave was 36-years-old at the time of death. Du Pont pled not guilty by reason of insanity, but was sentenced to 13-30 year incarceration. He died in jail in 2010.

Foxcatcher stunned the crowd at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with both its amazing cast and directing. Steve Carell plays the schizophrenic du Pont, and between the fake nose and the acting it is hard to recognize him. Carell rose to fame for being a clever and hilarious comedian, but the man has extensive skills with dramas as well. According to Carell, he read as much as he could about du Pont in research for his role, which was not hard since the vain man had written many documentaries about his life. The Office (2005) and The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) star may just have an Oscar in the future for his Foxcatcher performance. Channing Tatum of Magic Mike (2012) and 21 Jump Street (2012) plays the pro wrestler Mark Schultz. Tatum, who is also more known for his comedy roles, pulls off an impressively dramatic performance. Finally, Oscar nominated Mark Ruffalo plays the unfortunately gunned down David Schultz. Ruffalo has been in the news very often lately for his role as the famous superhero, The Hulk, and is currently filming Avengers: Age of Ultron. Fans are excited to see the decorated actor step into the Olympic gold medalist shoes in Foxcatcher this fall.

Along with winning Best Director at Cannes Film Festival, Bennett Miller has been nominated for one Oscar for his 2005 film, Capote, which as only the second film he ever directed. Miller has directed four actors he has worked with to Oscar nominations, including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Brad Pitt, and Jonah Hill. All together he has directed three films and two documentaries, and with them proved to the audience just how talented he is. Foxcatcher enters theaters on November 14, 2014.
