Grey’s Anatomy is losing Sandra Oh and fans of the hit series are not very happy about the actresses decision. Many are wondering how the show could survive without the Canadian born actress. However, Oh feels ready to depart and that it is time for the actress to explore other avenues.
Oh told The Hollywood Reporter (THR) that the Character of Cristina Yang is also ready to leave. “Creatively,” Oh said “I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go.” The actress told THR in an emotional interview that the process for the reason of Yang’s departure had to begin. The Canadian born actress was contemplating leaving Grey’s Anatomy back in May 2012 when the original six cast members signed a two-year contract bringing the group into season 10. Oh said that this gave the actress two years to prepare emotionally to let Yang go. Oh told THR that after the end of season 9 the shows creator, Shonda Rhimes, approached Oh and asked what the actresses thoughts were and Oh replied, “I’m ready.”
Oh told the cast of Grey’s Anatomy about the Sideways actresses plans of departing during the 200th episode table reading. Oh is definitely taking the decision seriously and told THR that there will be much-needed support in order to “leave fully and leave in a way that I feel like Cristina deserves.” Losing Sandra Oh from Grey’s Anatomy will certainly feel very different when fans tune in for Season 11. Then again the fans can always hope for a return of Yang in one or two episodes in the future.
Rhimes created Yang after creating Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo. Rhimes stated that the writer has always felt a personal connection to the character of Yang who is a driven doctor that puts her professional life first over her personal life. “One of the best days of my life as a writer,” Rhimes said, “happened the day Sandra Oh walked in my door to audition.” Rhimes went on to say that Season 10 is going to be a bittersweet year. “And when Sandra Oh walks out of my door,” Rhimes told THR “Grey’s Anatomy will once again be forever changed.”
The shows main cast of Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., and Justin Chambers all have contracts ending this season but no word has been given that the actors plan to leave the show as well. Dempsey, who plays Dr. Derek Shepherd, said that a discussion is worth having about whether the actor is ready to leave the hit series. Dempsey says that the actor believes that Grey’s Anatomy will go on without them. It certainly seems that it will and could continue even if the original cast all decide to eventually leave. With the new and younger cast already firmly in place, one could see how it could continue. However, Dempsey doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon as negotiations are to begin shortly for the renewal of the main cast. Though Grey’s Anatomy is losing Sandra Oh, the show has strong writers and will probably be around for a while.
