The long wait is over. Two years ago Ubisoft revealed Watch Dogs at E3 and blew minds. Today, (May 27 2014) the game finally releases for all next generation consoles as well as most last generation consoles. The real question everybody has had on their mind can finally be answered; does Watch Dogs live up to the hype?
In this age we have a lot of fears. The envasion of our privacy, the loss of our material possesions, our ordinary everyday devices misbheaving. In a world where secuity takes dominance, everything is at risk. Aiden Pearce has lost his niece and is ready to avenge her death. Using his hacking skills and The Profiler, Aiden will make use of the Central Operating System (a supercomputer hooked up to all of Chicago) to bring about his own definition of Justice.
This game has been developed Ubisoft Montreal, in association with Ubisoft Reflections, Ubisoft Paris, and Ubisoft Romania. Published by Ubisoft, this game 100 percent born from Ubisoft. Meant to capture the hearts of players on the next-generation of consoles, Watch Dogs takes the ordinary open world sandbox game and gives the player the opportunity to influence their surroundings by hacking into almost anything they want. The focus is on the single player campaign but Watch Dogs also features an online multiplayer mode that brings eight players into a competitive or co-operative battle.
So what does everyone think so far? Reviews have been mixed. With so much anticipation, people begin to hope for an experience unlike any other video game, which is quite unlikely. The PlayStation 4 version of Watch Dogs runs at a slightly better resolution than the Xbox One. Consequently, the PlayStation 4 version has been getting slightly better reviews than any of the other version.
Most reviews consider Watch Dogs to be something unique and fun, while simultaneously being an ordinary video game in many aspects. The game allows for exploration of an alternate reality Chicago with the ability to view or influence many surroundings. Sounds fun, but not necessarily something big enough to change the world of gaming. The game teaches lessons through the game over screen, which is something very familiar to gamers. One new type of gameplay that does emerge with the help of the Profiler (his hacking device) is the blend of mechanical usage with action platforming. The general consensus is that Watch Dogs is a solid game with some new ideas and old problems. Most reviews gave it roughly an 8-8.5 out of ten.
In case you love internet memes, this game is filled to the brime with them. If you don’t know what a meme is, consider it an inside joke between you and the internet. If you pay attention to the billboards in the game you may notice that after being hacked they will display messages from the developers. Such examples include, “I can has Cheezburger?” “All your base are belong to us” and many more.
If you enjoy video games with new ideas, shooters, or open world games, Watch Dogs is a suitable piece of entertainment for you to consider. Does it live up to the 82 awards given to it at E3 2012? No, but it does carry a good amount of fun with it.
