Zac Efron was extremely quiet about his trip to rehab for drinking, but has finally opened up about it. In a recent interview, he talked about the ups and downs from the last 12 months, which included his trouble with drinking alcohol.
The topic of drinking was a big secret for him, and he felt that secret weighing him down. It was after talking about seeking help for the alcohol abuse twice in the space of the year that he felt that weight being lifted off his shoulders. He was finally able to enjoy his life and look back on the year with a smile.
Just last month, Efron was struggling with his drinking secrets getting out. On Today, he explained that it felt humiliating. These were his mistakes, and people were finding out that he was not as perfect as many made him out to be. He came across as yet another troubled, child star. The 26-year-old made it big after taking the lead role in High School Musical, and its sequels.
To deal with Hollywood and growing up, he turned to drink. He acknowledged during his interview that he was drinking “way too much” and needed help to fight it. It was not just alcohol either, as he later turned to cocaine. In April 2013, he decided it was time to officially get help by going into rehab, but he wanted it to remain a secret.
It has taken over a year for Efron to open up about drinking and rehab. He has had to deal with the stigma, as well as people constantly watching for him to mess up again. Just last month he was involved in an altercation on Skid Row in Los Angeles, which made many question whether he really had given up the drinking.
To explain the altercation, he admitted that he was in the wrong area because his car had broken down. He was with his team, and they needed to find a specific destination. While calling someone, a homeless man tapped on the window and Efron’s bodyguard stepped out of the car, which led to a fight. The 26-year-old saw the man had a knife, and got out to disarm him and help his bodyguard.
Unfortunately for him, many people will keep their eyes on him and wait for him to do something wrong. It has happened with many other stars, such as Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Justin Bieber. He has, however, started going to AA meetings, which will help him stay on the straight and narrow. Rehab seems to have done him some good, and he has certainly gotten his career back on track.
The highlight of his year has been the movie Bad Neighbours, which stars Seth Rogan. Being in rehab put a hold on his career, and could have led to him getting none of the great roles because of his ruined image. Now his fans are standing by him and wishing him the best. Many others are hoping the best for him since Efron decided it was time to open up about his drinking and trips to rehab.
